Gay crashes in 200m quarters, status questionable

Sprinter Tyson Gay, 12 steps into his 200m quarterfinals race, crashed into the track as he began his turn down the home stretch. Looking to be stunned and in pain, Gay sat up on the track motioning from side to side with what apeared to be a left-hamstring or left-knee injury. No official word has hit the wire yet inside the media tent. Based off of the live-video feed, Gay was carried onto a rolling wheelchair and escorted from the track after almost flipping head over heels in lane 7. The crowd erupted in a collective gasp when Gay stumbled understanding the potential implications for the US in the 100m and 200m this August.

Gay is coming off several incredible Olympic Trials performances, setting a new American Record in the 100m and running the fastest 100m in the history of mankind, albeit aided by a 4.1mph wind, the following day. Gay's status for Beijing may now be in question if he has to deal with any sort of serious injury. Following the wind-aided, non legal, World Record last Sunday -- Gay told reporters he was at "100%" but that it was going to take several days to recover from such a demanding 100m on back to back days.

Update: 12:23PM PST There was no official word from USATF after Gay departed the track. His status has still not been not officially been released yet. Gay is currently being attended to by medical personal in the Bowerman Building adjacent to the 200m starting area.

Update: 1:03PM PST Word trickling around Hayward is that Tyson felt his leg tighten up after his 14th stride and decided to shut it down. In doing so, he tumbled to the ground and rolled up watching the finish of the 200m. At this time, unless an MRI reveals a tear in the hamstring, Gay is expected to be okay. His appearances at this years trials will be over unless he speaks to the media this afternoon.

Update: 1:33PM PST Tyson Gay's agent, Mark Wetmore, reports that Gay suffered a severe cramp in his left hamstring with no apparent damage beyond the cramp. Gay is back at his hotel, resting with his physiotherapist. Wetmore reports that Gay felt some tightness in the hamstring while warming up. "I'm very disappointed," Gay said. (Courtesty USATF)
