I'm not just "An Uncertain Onlooker", I'm totally confused. I watched the post Regionals Board Talk video done today (11-15) by Mark and Ryan and decided that these kind of videos need to play in slow motion so all the inuendos can make an impression in my head. Maybe by the time Nationals come, it will all straghten out.

I'm confused. I looked through results, and I found that Columbia beat Penn State at the Spiked Shoe Invitational at the start of this year. Doesn't that mean, considering what we now know (that Penn State got second in their region) that Columbia should be credited with one win because of Penn State's success?

Thanks a lot for the explanation! That was really clear and helpful. It's kind of an interesting rule, but I do agree with you that it should possibly be changed. Obviously no system is perfect. I remember a couple years ago when Cal Poly blew up at regionals and got 9th. They ended up pushing in Washington State and making it to Nationals, while UTEP (nationally ranked 4th at the time) got 3rd in the Mountain region behind Colorado and BYU?, and didn't get to go to Nationals because of their weak schedule.

Responding to what Andy was asking about, why Cal Poly wouldn't drag Portland, is because there is a rule that if a team can eventually get in on their own in the process, then they don't get pushed. By playing out the scenario that Portland doesn't get pushed here, Penn State gets Portland the second point that they need to get themselves into the meet on their own merit. The irony here is that just by showing up and losing to Portland (and everyone else in the meet, for that matter), Penn State gets themselves into the meet. If Portland doesn't have that win against Penn State, they can't get in on their own merit and have to get pushed early on, thus pouring in all the (more deserving) teams from the West and the process never makes it to Penn State.

The same thing happened with Ohio State last year. Cal Poly could have been pushed in, but when you play out the scenario that they don't get pushed in, Ohio State gets in, thus giving them the point (from Dellinger) that they need to get in on their own. If you play out the scenario that they don't get pushed, Ohio State gets blocked. Therefore, if Ohio State beats Cal Poly, they don't get in.
It's a horrible rule. The rule should be that if a team can get pushed or get in on their own later in the process, the push should still happen if that team getting in on their own prevents other teams from its respective region from getting in ahead of teams they have beaten head-to-head and/or have more points. In this case, Great Lakes teams get in ahead of West teams with more points, as well as head-to-head victories against those Great Lakes teams, just because of a lag in the West region caused by this stupid rule.

Why did you choose Colorado as the 2nd place team out of the Mountain Region?? What happens to them if they get third? Also, does UTEP have any chance w/o getting an auto spot?

If Michigan runs 4 of the guys that they ran at ND at Regionals -- wouldnt that give Florida, Butler, Tulsa, Florida State, ND an additional point? If so, does that change things? They ran Fellows, Xmas, April, Seth T, Dobmeier, Nalli and McNamara.

Another thing: From PreNats in the White Race, UCLA beat both Indiana and Mich. State from the GL Region. In the Blue Race, Cal and Cal Poly both beat Notre Dame and Butler. It's obvious from that race that the West teams out of the top 2 are better than the Great Lakes teams out of the top 2. To have 5 teams from the GL in before the West's 3rd, and only 4 West teams total, shows how crazy the system can be.

I'm a little confused on why Cal Poly wouldn't push in Portland much earlier in the rankings. When Butler gets in at #25, they get in with 2 points (Notre Dame, Princeton); Cal Poly would have 2 points also by then (Notre Dame, Providence,) AND they beat Butler at PreNats Blue Race. Same goes for the next pick NC State with 3 points to CP's 3 points, with CP beating NC State at PreNats. In fact, 3 Teams get in before Cal Poly with equal or less points that have lost to Cal Poly this year. It isn't until Penn State get's in, to give CP 5 points that they "push" Portland in. Maybe I don't understand the system very well or something. Any clarification would be fantastic though!

There is a mistake because at Pre-Nats in the Blue race NC State beat Butler. So if they both have 2 wins then NC State should be going in before Butler. I don't think it changes anything but the order those two teams enter the meet. I could be wrong though. Great coverage, but I know from experience that the Kolas calculator isn't necessarily 100% accurate. By the way, anyone know where the Kolas calculator gets its name?

Ultimately not sure it makes a difference or not, but it appears you have Butler and NC State racing each other twice, each winning once and then Butler winning on common opponents. I'm not finding where Butler beat NC State head-to-head, though it's possible I just missed it. Again, I looked at it some more and don't think it makes a difference, just pointing it out.

Confusion on Butler/NC State. Initially stated that NC State gets their third point by beating Butler, but then immediately afterwards was stated that the reason Butler gets in before them (when both tied with 2 wins) is that Butler wins in head-to-head competition. Don't know if that was a verbal slip-up or what, but that probably needs to be addressed/clarified.
