Danny Lopez had the pleasure of being coached by two of the best coaches this country has ever seen. Lopez spent the first part of his college years at Central Arizona College under legendary head coach George Young. Lopez moved from Coolidge, Arizona to Eugene, Oregon to run for the Ducks and another legendary coach, Bill Dellinger. Under Dellinger Lopez continued to flourish. Lopez ran on the 1989 cross country team that finished second where he finished 44th. On the track Lopez ran into the Ducks record books with a 8:28 steeple his senior year. That time puts Lopez number four on the Oregon top 10 list. Lopez finished second at the 1990 NCAA championships in the steeple as well. 1992 was Lopez's best year and he had his best race on the best day. At the Olympic Trials in New Orleans, Lopez ran the fastest steeple of his life with a time of 8:16.92 where he finished 3rd to make the Barcelona Olympic Games. After Lopez's running career was over he continued to work with the ducks when he was the director of operations for the UO track team.
