Coach Paul Ereng surprised the world when he won the 1988 Olympic 800 after his freshman year at Virginia. Ereng beat out a very talented field that included the 1984 Olympic gold medalist Joaquim Cruz from Brazil. Coach Ereng moved on to coaching after his own athletic career came to an end, but the success has not stopped. Ereng, A native of Kenya, coached IAAF High Performance Training Center in Eldoret, Kenya. In 2004 coach Ereng guided steeplechaser Eziekiel Kembo to the Gold in Athens. Ereng's success with Steeplers continued at UTEP where he coached Mircea Bogdan to a National Championship in 2005. Since Ereng took over at UTEP in the spring of 2004 he has trained an NCAA champ and six All-Americans.
