Frank Shorter is arguably one of, if not, the greatest distance runners in American history. The Gold Medal he won in the Marathon at the 1972 Olympic games is the last Gold medal won by a US male distance runner. Shorter followed his Gold in Munich with a Silver in the following Olympics in Montreal. During the seventies shorter dominated U.S. distance running with 13 national titles. One in the 5000, two in the marathon, four in cross-country and seven in the 10,000. Shorter retired a year after the 1976 Montreal Olympics, but has continued to be a pioneer for the sport of Track and Field. Today Shorter is a strong force in the fight against performance enhancing drugs, President Clinton and Shorter worked hand in hand to develop the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA).
