In 1981 Patrick Shane took the helm as Head coach of cross country and distances at Brigham Young University. This was the first season the University offered a women's program. As cross-country coach, Shane has made quite an impression on women?s distance running.

Under Shane?s guidance the Cougars have earned 4 NCAA titles and 3 runner-up finishes. Shane has coached 6 Olympians and 48 All-Americans in cross-country. Since 1981 his teams have made all but two NCAA National Championships and have never finished lower then 16th. Coach Shane also coached 1984 individual cross-country champion Ed Eyestone and accomplished runner Henry Marsh. Shane has been awarded NCAA coach of the year three times.
