One of the greatest athlete-coaches in US history must be Bill Dellinger. As athlete he competed in three Olympic Games and finished with the bronze medal in Tokyo; as coach he won multiple NCAA team championships. In addition to his own Olympic championship, Dellinger broke the American 5k record three different times; he set the American 1500 meter record along with setting two indoor World records in the two and three miles. While at Oregon he coached three NCAA cross titles and one track title in 1984. Dellinger coached at Oregon until 1998 but he did not stop; the last Olympian he coached for the 2000 games in Sydney was Nick Rogers. In his career, Dellinger has coached many successful athletes: Prefontaine, Centrowitz, Chapa, and Salazar, to name a few.
