As a freshman at Tennessee, Mark Sylvester burst onto the scene at the 2002 indoor championships when he propelled his team to victory with an unexpected second place finish and eight team points. It only took a couple of months of competition in Knoxville before Sylvester rewrote the Tennessee record books; he broke the 600m and the 800m records. Later, the 2002 outdoor season was just as impressive as Sylvester clocked 1:46 to finish sixth at the NCAA outdoor championship. This was followed by a disappointing 2003 season when Sylvester red shirted indoors and did not make the outdoors finals. In 2004, Sylvester returned to NCAAs again and earned another All-American certificate when he finished eighth. After 2004, Sylvester stayed out of the track spotlight but he is currently working with Coach Gagliano in Eugene, OR.
