Matt Centrowitz is one of the best American distance runners of all time. Coached by Bill Dellinger, he competed in two Olympics and broke the American 5k record. At Oregon he broke Prefontaine?s 1500 meter school record and won a NCAA cross title. As a professional, Centrowitz won four consecutive 5,000 meter US championships from 1979 to 1982. In 1982, Centrowitz broke the US 5k record when he won the race in 13:12.91. Today Centrowitz is coaching at American University and he has elevated the program from obscurity up to being a regular at the NCAA championships. Centrowitz has guided seven different athletes to All-American status and in 2004 the men?s cross team qualified for nationals for the first time in 20 years.
