Mark Conover is currently in his 10th year as the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo cross country and distance coach. Coach Conover has been at Cal Poly since 1996. In 2004 the Cal Poly men's team finished 10th in the nation. The men's cross country team has won the Big West Conference title five of the last seven years. Conover is also known for his own running career.

In 1988 he was the U.S. Olympic trials champion in the marathon with a time of 2:12.26. He then went on to compete in the Summer Games in Seoul, Korea. During the early 90's Mark Conover was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. Conover endured six months of chemotherapy and overcame the cancer. Currently he is healthy and is enjoying his coaching career.
