Coach Conner has guided the Portland Pilots for the past 17 seasons to national recognition with 7 national appearances and 4 All-Americans. Portland has posted 4 top 12 finishes and 3 top ten. The 2001 7th place team finish is the Pilots highest finish to date. Coach Conner's Pilots have become known for tight pack running and they used this strategy to perfection in 2005 when they surprised the country with a 9th place finish. In 2006 the Pilots finished 2nd at the Bill Dellinger Invitational and captured their 28th consecutive West Coast Conference. They have been ranked in the top ten for most of the season. Conner's runners also have success on the track with 14 All-Americans including last year when John Moore placed 10th in the 10,000 meters. Coach Conner has earned a reputation for his development of 10,000 meter runners and steeplechasers. Over his tenure 11 athletes have qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10k and Coach Conner has had six runners finish top ten in the steeplechase.
