Derrick Peterson was ready to walk away from the sport if he did not reach his goal and attend the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Peterson was ranked number one in the 800 going into the 2000 Olympic trials but was out kicked down the home stretch and finished fifth. 2004 was his do or die year for Peterson because he could not handle another four years of disappointment. Unlike 2000, Peterson was the one passing down the home stretch in 2004, he finished in the top three and had his ticket to Athens. Peterson is currently training for the 2008 Olympics in China and is the Assistant Sprint Coach for his alma mater, the Mizzou Tigers. Derrick?s undisputed stats going back to his high school days in Georgia where he was a 2 time Georgia State champ as well as elected Georgia State High School Athlete of the year. Next comes the parade of collegiate track honors: 8 time Big 12 champ in 800m; 6 time All American; Missouri U record for both 800m indoor (1:45.88) and 800 m outdoor (1:45.18) as well as American Collegiate record holder for 800m indoor. In post-collegiate competitions, Derrick showed no signs of cutting himself any slack and this is what helped him place 3rd in Sacramento?s 2004 Olympic Trials with a PR of 1:45.08. In Athens Derrick came in 4th during an opening round which did not allow him to get into the final meet. However, the Olympics was not the end of the road for Derrick; he has kept his feet fleeting around many competitions in 2005 and 2006. With history like that, he will soon add trainees from his Mizzou Tigers to accompany him in achieving many more champion performances.
