My last running race was the 2004 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships, held at Crystal Spinrgs xc course in Belmont, Ca. I may have done several runs in the weeks following this but they were quickly non-existant...

I became a serious road cyclist for two years. I trained and raced a lot! I even won a big race in 2007 and had aspirations of maybe being good enough to be a professional one day. However, several unsatisfactory races lead to low moral, and constant second guessing of what I am doing with my time. This was to be my last season of racing... period.

FAST FORWARD 3 years... My cardio conditioning has turned to mush, and I had found new hobbies including surfing, and riding dirtbikes...

I suppose a trip to Boulder, Co for New Years 2010 weekend changed everything for me. I was visiting an old junior college teamate, who is now a Professional triathlete and also one of the top du-athletes (run/bike) in the world and has represented Team USA at the World Championships. He has also completed several Ironman Triathlons, including finshing well at the World championships in Kona. Justin and I went for a 10 mi run early one morning. Well... I rode the mountain bike along side... Too me watching him train in the frigid early morning air on snow and ice shows true grit and dedication. I crashed just minutes into the excursion on a patch of ice... We talked about his racing, future plans, as well as other elite athletes hes meet while living in Boulder and the AMAZING times they've put out. All this talk was starting a small fire inside me... And I began thinking back to the days we would train together and I would often times put the hurt on him... both running, and cycling. Now I'm this puss riding a mtn bike trying to keep up with a runner...

It wasn't until I returned home did I have a true epiphany. In one small thought I knew exactly what i wanted to do... and had an overwhelming desire to do so! for the first time in 5 years! I wanted to get back into shape. And I wanted to RACE! Not only did I want to start running again I wanted to run a marathon. I also knew I wanted to compete in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race in Colorado, a race Lance Armstrong won last year. In order to be successful I knew I needed to make goals and and have something to work towards. So here it is... while I may not return to the form I was in 5 years ago, I still feel I can acheive some reasonable fitness within a years time. So I made some time goals to shoot for. As well as what race(s) i will do. There will undoubtably be some 5k, 10k type races thrown in there as well...
