Aaron Braun - Houston Half

I’ve been looking forward to doing this race for more than a year now. That seems pretty weird to say about any race besides an Olympic Trials race, but there is a reason behind that. I was originally scheduled to make my half marathon debut at this race last year. What better time to do it? So many of my teammates were preparing for the Marathon Trials in Houston the day before, so we would be able to do a lot of the same training together; and I thought it would be the perfect way to end my fall/winter schedule, then take a break and ge...

We're number 3!

That’s certainly not a phrase heard chanted at many sporting competitions; but with it being an Olympic year, it’s certainly still relevant. I know that fact first hand; all spring I had envisioned me crossing the finish line at Eugene in the top 3. What an experience it would be to get to do a victory lap around Hayward Field with a small American flag, knowing I would get to represent my country in London. Unfortunately that dream didn’t become a reality as I just wasn’t strong enough to cover the move made by Rupp, Te...

Snow days suck!

Snow days suck!

What!? Writing that title feels blasphemous. As a kid growing up in Colorado, snow days were something that were dreamed about. Basically they were a spontaneous Christmas. Whenever big snow storms came in, I remember listening to am radio stations, watching the bottom line of news stations, calling friends with parents that worked in our school district; all hoping that Poudre School District would be one of the districts that would have a snow day. One of my favorite memories of growing up was the snow days we got in my junior year of high sc...

As you may or may not know, I will be running the US Cross Country Championships in St. Louis in 2 weeks. I have always loved cross country since I ran my first 5k with my boxers pouring out of my short shorts as a freshman in high school. I've always thought there was something special about running through the woods, taking all kinds of different turns, and sprinting up and down hills. I have also come to the belief that being good at cross country takes a certain kind of toughness, a certain kind of manliness. Another thing I've always thou...

12 days of Christmas (Runner style!)

I set out to write a Christmas style blog, and decided it would be cool to do a 12 days of Christmas remix, one fit for runners. Looking around online, I saw that it had been done before; but I decided to go ahead and give it a go, trying to put an elite spin on it; so I hope you all enjoy! For the 12 days of Christmas, I hope running gives to me: 12 Pair of adidas 11 Core Exercises 10 Grueling Long Runs 9 Hours of Sleep 8 Barefoot Striders 7 Mile Repeats 6 Abs of Steel 5 Tempo Runs a (sub) 4 Minute Mile 3 Big Kicks 2 Spiked Shins And a spot on...

Keep that Thanksgiving state of mind

It is almost a week after Thanksgiving, and most people seem to have completely forgotten about it, and moved into full Christmas mode. Trees for sale, exchanging Christmas lists with family and friends, Christmas Story and Grinch movies on TV, and Christmas lights galore all mean that Thanksgiving has passed, and Christmas season is here. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, but Thanksgiving is a very under-rated holiday. Outside of the 4th of July, I can't think of a more American holiday than one that involves families coming together to st...

The past week was a very fun and productive week for me, as I prepare for my life as a dad/husband/runner instead of just a husband/runner. Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to go to "Boot camp for new Dads" a free class sponsored by the local hospital to help prepare soon to be fathers prepare for a big change in their lives, and help them be more involved in child rearing duties. Both of my parents were extremely caring, supportive, loving, and just about any other positive adjective you can think of when I was growing up. Annika and I wan...

My training in the last couple weeks has been going really well. Annika and I have pretty much gotten settled into our new place, so its been easy to get the focus back on running. I've been doing a lot of solid steady states, and some really good long runs. The mileage has started to come together, and as a result I am starting to feel really aerobically strong. On Monday, Scott and I had our second time trial of the season; this one was two miles on the track. I liked the distance, because I figured it would be a great tune-up for the CVS 5k ...

Its been a busy few days for Annika and I. On Tuesday, following a smooth track workout, we signed our lease to move into a new place. We are very excited about our new place, as there is a lot more space for our growing family. It was a long, busy day lifting all of our stuff; man moving stinks! Luckily my cousin Collin is visiting us in Flagstaff and helped me with a lot of the heavy lifting. Annika was especially excited for the move in order to set up Makenzie's room, she has done a great job, as the room is a perfect fit for a little baby ...

This past weekend was a lot of fun. Annika and I drove back to Alamosa to attend the ASC Cross Country and Track reunion. It celebrated the 90 year anniversary of the school opening, 40 year anniversary of the first men's national title, and 30 years since the women won their first national title. While we were there, Annika also had a baby shower in which we received numerous great gifts for our baby's arrival, and got to catch up with some of her friends, including some old teammates from Western State. The reunion was a good opportunity to s...
