October Track Racin!
November 5, 2009
The segment wrap up! Well my 2009 racing season came to a close this past Saturday on the track on the campus of IUPUI. Many of my friends have asked to tell them about the race. What better place to do that than with a blog.
The race was part of the Indiana Invaders track series. For the past few years, they have put on a 10,000 meters in the fall. To me it seems like a pretty good idea. You can get a qualifier early and then focus on training for Nationals, rather than chasing times all spring and… more »
Big Props for Time Magazine and CNN for their responsible journalism!
September 2, 2009
As many of you are aware, recently there has been a great buzz about this new research saying that "Exercise is useless," at least according to Time magazine. Then, I'm at work the next day and all hell breaks loose. Most of you know, I work in cardiac rehabilitation at a local hospital. The reason that most of these people are there because they spent the last 40 years of their life being sedentary, eating whatever they desired, or just did whatever they wanted. The last thing these patients need to hear is that they won't lose weight by exercising.… more »
Development or Income?
July 18, 2009
The decision to pass on a marathon this fall was a little difficult. Last fall, I was probably in the best shape of my life, but was probably just a little overtrained going into the actual race. At one point I ran a 10 mile tempo in 49:30, then came back and did the 26.2k simulation run and came through the 25k split in 1:18 (thinking to myself, how comfortable I felt). But I left the race out on the dirt roads north of Rochester. I was 11th at NYC, but never even put myself in a position to finish… more »
Suggestions and Dedications
May 17, 2009
Alright, the first part of this blog is aimed at a certain young man whose name happens to be Mike Kilburg. Since Mike has come to the team he has managed to steal Kyle O'brien's guitar and taint it with that Starbuck's drinkin', flannel wearing, screatching Seattle based noise!!! Well, listen here PAL, if you are going to live in the Midwest, then you need to learn some good ol' Midwest, Motor City, Rock and Roll Harmony!
Here are two suggestions. First start with Detroit's Own White Stripes cover of Son House's 'Death Letter'

Post Boston
April 30, 2009
A lot of people asked me within a couple days after Boston, "What's next?" I really tried to shy away, because in my mind, retirement was the first option. I really want to talk about is the fire and desire to become the absolute best you can.
As I eluded to, I was pretty bummed after Boston and really had no desire to go through the cycle anymore. However, after a few days, the depression really turned into anger and frustration. Over the last?year and a half I have gone through an amazing transition as a runner. I have been consistant,… more »
Have you ever seen...
March 10, 2009
Have you ever seen a 140 pound Grizzly Bear rolling down a hill? Well, if you would have been doing our workout a week ago, you would have been in for a treat.
In our Boston prep, we spend 4 weeks of doing our typical workouts, but on a primarily downhill (but rolling) dirt road. Today was 6x1.5 miles at 10 seconds faster than pace. In early March the roads are unpredictable, and on top of Drahner Hill, the road was ok, except around Dead-Man's curve. In this little spot there was one tire track width of dry road.

Spring Training
February 22, 2009
February brings an annual custom in the Hanson camp- the kick off of Spring Training in the Flrida Orange groves. It's certainly not a "vacation" per say, as we use it as our first week of big miles. Coming from the tundra where our runs are usually pretty slow, as soon as we hit the the roads in Florida- it feels like every run is all out. So we are working hard, but do manage to get some fun in. However, now that the average age of our team is 47. Brian is 58, Kyle 52, Morgan, 48, and myself… more »
A Christmas Tribute
December 14, 2008
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays you’ll find me at the hospital. Not as a patient, but as an employee of the cardiology department working with folks who have had some sort of cardiac event. It’s amazing the stories I have heard and the friends I have made over the last three years. There are a few who are very close to me and have made a serious impact on my life and these fine folks have shown me what is really important in life. These guys are like family to me and I just wanted to tell you a little… more »
A New York Minute (Or 138 minutes- almost 139)
November 6, 2008
I haven't blogged in a long time, letting my repsonsibilites lag. But, I haven't had a whole lot to talk about. In any case, I was a partcipant in the NYC marathon this past weekend and this is a condensed version of 2:18:38 of a hard run.
ING NYC Marathon
This year was my first real marathon in over two years, and what blew me away is how interested people were in this race. As many know, I was barely able to walk going into the 2007 Olympic Trials and the only reason I went was, well, it was the… more »
It's time to get serious!
March 18, 2008
So, I recieved an interesting email from noneother than Mike Morgan today. It was informing me that Blackheath Golf Club has an unlimited weekday golf pass for $600. That's very interesting, because Brian Sell's great uncle- George W. Bush is cutting me a check for $600 here in the near future. What better way to stimulate economics than by stimulating the local Rochester economy. I'm just doing my part, right? Now, the big concern is this. Two years ago, I could drive a golf ball 300 yards. Not every time, but 50/50. And don't say I'm full of crap, because… more »
Catch Hell Blues, Version 2
February 14, 2008
I had written a blog a few days ago, but then thought better of it. I thought it was funny, and so did Brian, who was the butt of my writing escapade. However, as I was running on the treadmill before catching a plane to Austin, I thought better of it. You see, Brian and I come from middle class farm country where you can make fun of anyone and everyone and not worry about offending anyone. That's because no one's excluded. Jeff Foxworthy built an entire career off of telling jokes about my family, and I don't care. It… more »
A new begining
January 16, 2008
So here we are, Flotrackr. I didn't even know this existed.
I have no idea what to write, so this will probably not be that interesting.
I guess, since it's Januray, it's a time for new beginings and resolutions. 2007 was a fairly tough year for me. It started off well, as I dominated Chad and Clint at the New Year's 4 miler in NYC. I then followed it up with a 40 second PR in the half marathon. However, after that, there was nothing too spectacular. I was ok with that, because everything… more »
