Mammoth / Sherwin Creek fire from Mammoth Creek #1 8/3/08

After a hike last Saturday, my wife and I drove to a new hot tub someone had recommended as a cool place to go. As I came around the corner on the two rut dirt road I saw far more dude flesh than I ever wanted to see. I attempted to drive past, but drove into a camping area where a fat guy was grilling nude waving at us. At least he had a hat on so he would not get sunburned. I hope did not get confused about where the bratwurst was located. There was a car ahead of me crawling along. I threw the gearbox into reverse and spit up dust at all four corners in my Subaru and got out of there in a hurry. As soon as there was a space wide enough I did one of those action movie reverse whippets and drove away forward. That horrible image may be burned in my brain for years in my nightmares. Thanks for the hot tip, Dave! I tried to warn some young people on their way in, but like Bush and the Aug 6, 2001 Security Brief, they ignored the warning.

Why do you only find ugly, old, fat dudes at nude beaches, hot tubs, etc.? I have heard about these beautiful women at Euro Beaches laying out nude, but go to Black’s beach in San Diego or hot tubs near Mammoth and all you find is old fat dudes. Put that thing away! NOBODY wants to see that. If you’re a thin good looking female, OK, but even then a bikini goes a long way to keeping a little mystery and intrigue alive. Sorry for the double standard.

Anyway, after a long day of hiking Saturday I saw a Half Marathon on Sunday (on trails at 8000ft) as a good opportunity to get in a long steady state run. I got out of bed feeling very tired and my feet hurt from wearing my boots all day Saturday, but I got going and signed up for the race. I had no intention of blowing it out, but probably ran a little harder than intended because I followed the lead woman. She was pretty tough. I got a side cramp from dehydration with about 1.5mi to go and suffered a bit at the end, but got a great workout. Finished 5th overall.

A big fire started just south of Mammoth Sunday and everyone could see the huge smoke plume blowing out into the valley. As it got dark, we could see the red/orange glow through the smoke. The fire planes and helicopters were buzzing overhead for hours. We had planned to do a hike in that area this evening so we went to the lakes basin instead. It was very pleasant to hike to Emerald Lake and some meadows beyond. This time we brought bug repellant.

This fire started just as another fire was contained on the other side of Yosemite. That one made an incredible amount of smoke over Tuolumne Meadows, darkening the sky and making the sun an eerie brownish red.

As of this morning, the helicopters are still buzzing over the fire and they say it is 88% contained. There is very little smoke now. The smoke was never really an issue in town since the wind was blowing to the East.
