Filling the Olympic Void
The Olympics are over and I spent the entire 2 weeks glued to the TV. I don’t care what the sport is, I watch it. The Olympics are the pinnacle of sport and it is exciting to see those who rise to the occasion and those who don’t. While Phelps was amazing, I would put Bolt’s and Bekele’s performances on the same level. Liu Xaing, Tyson Gay, Deena Kastor all proved they are human this year.
Now that the Olympics are over, there is the void left. We all have goals and when their time has passed (achieved or not), there is a void. How do we fill it and move on to the next thing?
The networks decided to fill the void with 6 hours a day of coverage of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. OhMyGod! Kill me now. We already knew the outcome. Nothing new was said by anybody. It wasn’t that interesting anyway. Worse yet, they could have fed several small countries for a year with the money they blew on limos, caviar, wine, escorts and blow. This country needs an overhaul and I don’t foresee that from any candidate. Politics are far more polluted and corrupt than any Sports steroid scandals. Fortunately, there is still Track & Field. It is excitement and hope.
The European meets yield some fast times and good races, but pale in comparison to the excitement of the Olympics. After some European racing and a break, most athletes will start training hard again for next year. Some may even be done with sports and move on to another phase of life.
Fortunately, running can be a life long pursuit. There is always another race. The goals change along the way – Personal Bests, winning, placing, age group grading, etc. But the goals keep it fun for me even if I am not as fast as I once was and never was that fast anyway. So I set big goals and little ones. Achieving the little ones helps achieve the bigger ones. I’ll run a Fall Marathon with a few races along the way. When that is done, there will be a void and then I will set another goal. It is an endless cycle and for me it never gets old.
