My Sunday long run was pretty cool. I was about 1:15 out and a guy on a mountain bike came by me and said “morning” as he passed. I could see a runner up ahead of me on the dirt road who looked “for real”, but I was slowly gaining ground. The biker rode up beside the runner and was talking to her. We started up a long hill (about 1.5mi) and I caught them. I realized it was Kate O’neil and Terrance Mahon on the bike. Then Amy Hastings jumps out of an SUV up ahead and starts running with O'neil. I asked how her 8K had gone and she said not well. I ran with them up and over the hill and down the other side (another mile or so) chatting along. Both are racing next weekend – O'neil in the Chicago Marathon and Hastings in the Tufts 10K. I wished them luck as I made my U turn to head home - back up the big nasty hill.

I ended up with a 2hr 15min run and felt very strong. My left knee started hurting a little near the end and aches some today so I took the day off as a precautionary measure. I guess I am not indestructible, but otherwise I am not sore from the long run. Hopefully I’ll be ready for a group run tomorrow.

Thursday I ran up on a bear. I stopped about 30-40 feet away as I saw him crossing the trail I was on. He stopped and looked at me as I slowly backed up, then calmly walked on his way. Definitely makes me a little more cautious about running trails solo in the evening.
