Failure is not an option
Lunar Rendezvous 5K
Last weekend I was in Houston for my youngest bro’s wedding. Of course I checked the local running schedule and went out to the Lunar Rendezvous 5k at the NASA Space Center. At 6:45am, it was already over 90degF and about 150% humidity. I ran very conservatively and steadily at 5:40/mi. I finished in 23rd place in a pretty tough field with 17:43. My wife said I looked like I took a shower with my running clothes on. I am awed by the winner who ran 15:01 in what I consider tough conditions. We toured the Space Center and it was fascinating. My highlight was the Saturn V rocket that was used for the Apollo missions. It’s Ginormous.
Back in the OC for a week I ran another hot but thankfully dry workout with Cal Coast – 20min threshold run on hills. Back in Mammoth this weekend another brother came up for the weekend and proved he is serious about his fall marathon. I suggested 90min, but he insisted on 16mi out on the Green Church Rd. We spent 15min sitting in Mammoth Creek after that in hopes that it would reduce the muscle damage. It was fun to watch him squirm as he got into the cold water.
Tuesday I ran 3x1mi with the High Sierra Striders in Shady Rest Park. It only sounds like a cemetery, but at 7800ft running hard, it feels like it may be your final resting place. I managed 5:46, 5:43, 5:36 with 3:00 rest. I was pretty happy with that. Andrew brought out the new club tech Ts. Excellent! Deena, Sara & Ryan Hall and Mike Mckeeman were out for repeat 800s after our workout. I did not want my workout diminished by watching them run 30sec faster than my 800 splits, so I split.
The Tuesday night Village Championship Mountain Bike Race was a Battle Royale between me and ET. I hung on for the win, but just barely. I love mountain bike racing. I think I missed my calling. Video attached.
