Contentment

"Run and Destroy" Contentment is the enemy of every competitive runner. You may not know this yet, but if you're serious about your running you will come to understand this. The moment you let satisfaction creep in, even in the slightest, is the very moment your performance level will begin to slip. The question you may ask then, 'How to fight it?' A good question, but an even better one is, 'how do you fight happiness and why?' I can almost see the puzzled look on your faces. What the hell am I talking about? I'm talking about gratification, complacency… more »

Perspective

The life of a runner requires traveling to many races nationally and internationally throughout the year. We spend a lot of time flying around the country and it can get to be tiresome. I've learned to take the extra time when flying to reflect. I reflect on past races and examine races that I'm traveling to or the training I've done. Sometimes I look at my life and the bigger picture focusing on where I've been and where I'm really going. I was admiring the landscape below as I flew home from a race recently and had a realization. It's… more »

Sustain the Pain

I have been quite busy lately so I apologize for the delay posting the new blog. I decided to try something new for the blog this week. I was cleaning house going through some old paperwork I have here and came across this letter I wrote to a close friend in 2003. It is a personal letter I thought I might share as a past experience some of you dedicated runners may relate to. So enjoy. Also, since the release of Run Reckless a lot of you have been emailing asking where to get a copy of the films theme… more »

Win-Win

I'm very fortunate to be in a position (as a runner) to approach everything I do with passion and have the freedom to race in a way that truly challenges me. I had put myself in a great position this year coming to Eugene having qualified to race in the 1500, steeplechase, 5k and 10k. I had the freedom to compete in any event I wanted to and had either the 1st or 2nd best time in 3 of those events coming into the meet. Having this freedom allows me to make racing decisions many others can't afford to make.… more »

Live It Up

Live it up. These are three words I've heard quite often recently. Normally they just roll through my psyche without much effect, but recently I've started to really dwell on this little mantra. If any of you know Jack Daniels then you know this is Jack's personal mantra whether he recognizes it or not. If you show up for a workout and feel unsure, Jack will just say, "Live it up". Got a big race coming up and you're feeling the pressure, Jack will say, "Live it up". Stop in Jack's office up here in Flagstaff and on your way… more »

"Attitude of Gratitude"

I just got back from a run on one of my favorite single track trails in Sedona, AZ. As I've said I love the solitude of running there and I enjoy taking that time to reflect. I had a lot to reflect on having just returned from my win at the U.S 15k Championships in Jacksonville, Florida. I enjoyed every step of that race and I ran alone from the front never looking back once. Having such a close finish also added to the value of the win. Reflecting on the race and my running career today has reinforced my… more »

A thank you to running

I'm not accustomed to writing about my experiences in a personal journal entry let alone an online blog. I did some blogging in the past about 6 years ago, but it was very short lived with just a couple of entries. I don't like to keep a running journal for logging mileage and have only taken the time to log a journal a few times in the recent past when I felt it was important to do so. I like to try to live in the present and be completely present in what I'm doing when it comes to my… more »
