Cold Weather Training

While all my roomates are enjoying there time down in Florida this week, I'm stuck at the house alone in the cold. I've done a lot of training in cold weather so you think it would get easier after awhile. What keeps me going though is remembering some of the performances I've had after training in tough conditions. One particular race the comes to mind is a indoor 3k in Seattle a few years ago. I spent a month at home in northern Wisconsin training. I remember doing a 10 mile tempo run right before I left. It was below zero and a foot of snow on the gound, I only ran something like 55:00 with an all out effort. I tried not to let it bother me to much and ended up running a PR 7:55 a few days later. I really think training in the cold and snow is comparable to training at altitude. It slows you down a bit and forces you to work on your strength. We might not have nice views of the mountains but I have to think positive to keep myself going some days. This came to mind as we had another very cold morning workout today.

I live in Illinois and it hasn't been over 32*F in over 3 months I'd say. Fortunately, the spring is coming.
