Post-op day 4 plus surgery photos!!!

So far so good. I've been pleasantly suprised at my lack of pain after my surgery on Friday. I keep waiting for the bomb to drop, but it seems like each day my hip feels stronger with less pain and better motion. Most rehab protocols call for 2-3 weeks of crutch use, but I feel like I'm going to be pushing it to get to 1 week.

I'm very optimistic regarding my return to running at a high level. My plan is to hold-off on running until my hip feels super strong and I don't have any pain with walking, swimming, or riding. Winter is right around the corner and that will be a natural force to slow me down. My hopes are that come spring time I'll be ready to race again.

This whole FAI (femoral acetabular impingement) saga has been unbelievable. To think that I can go from running two sub 2:19 marathons in 2008 to unable to run a 1/4mile without pain is crazy. Also crazy is the fact that a x-ray AND MRI come back negative. I stubled upon this FAI diagnosis while looking for anwers on the internet.

I am starting to discover cases of FAI in my clinic. If you or any runner/athlete you know has had consistent hip pain that does not respond to rest, please chech out hipfai.com. Enjoy a couple of shots from the O.R. One is of my cam lesion, the next is the cam lesion gone bye-bye. The third is my leg after surgery.

Clint - how were you eventually diagnosed with FAI? Was your pain strictly on the outside of your hip? I am 5 months into a deep, outside localized hip pain, and have gone from being a competitive post-collegiate to struggling through 3 minutes of running. My MRI indicated a tiny tear which led to getting an MRI-Arthograph which came back negative, and a bone scan which also came back negative. My orthopedic doctor has written me off, any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks!

Clint I wish you the best, and I wish you would come back for some of my meatloaf!
