Winning, Agents, and Outdoor

David Torrence | Profile
April 3, 2009

And then the pack started moving. The gentle jostling for position during the first mile had now become an all out roller-derby of elbows and shoulders, surges and spikes. Rohatinsky firmly moves to the lead, Huling counter surges the split second the pace falters. I think we’re nearing 1000 to go, things start to burn…pace falters again…I’m starting to feel it, it’s time to go. Nervously determined, I move out and take control. Constantly looking up at the jumbotron, I realize that despite my move and continued acceleration, it looks like everybody is still there. I start to panic…getting worried…what do I do?...anticipating the inevitable challenge to my lead…start zoning out…tensing up…

…a friend from the crowd: “It’s DO or DIE! GET IT NOW!”

Awoken out of complacency. Adrenaline surges through my veins as I barrel down the homestretch coming into the last lap, knees high, arms driving, glance over at the lap ticker that reads “1”. Bell rings. Sprinting….crowd cheering…Every last bit of energy put into final steps, drives, breaths…hold off one last challenge…feel him fade!…think it’s mine…look around….know it’s mine….*FLEX*….cross tape.

-------------------------------------------

It’s been a little over a month since that happened. And just so you don’t think I’ve become all “Big-Shot” since the victory, I’d like to apologize for not writing earlier, but as you all know, once you win an Indoor National Championship it’s pretty much Red-Carpet Events here, Late Night Show Interviews there, and it gets a bit time-consuming.

Ok, maybe it’s not exactly like that. In reality, it’s been more of the same. Aside from winning some cash (which I am STILL waiting for, USATF) I’m basically in the same spot as I was before Indoors. Still working odd-jobs for cash. Still searching for a more consistent cash flow. Scrimping here and there. Still have a couple months left before broke. Still contract-less.

I thought to myself after that race, “Ok… NOW I have some ammo.” Some bragging rights to entice potential sponsors. Some concrete proof that nobody can take away from me. Time to put matters into my own hands and figure out what is available to a national champ. So time to talk to AGENTS.

But how the hell do you do that? There’s no yellowpages with their names and contacts, no “yelp” to read their reviews and ratings, no commercial on TV asking if I’m an unsponsored track athlete that needs representation. No. Apparently, the way this initial process works (at least from my experience), is pretty much all through word of mouth. I ask my coaches, friends, alumni, etc,: “Who knows who, and who knows what about who.” Certain people know of certain agents, Pro’s and Con’s are thrown around.

After compiling a list of 5 agents that sounded the best to me, I decided to give them a call and talk to them directly about my goals and what would be out there and what they could do for me.

Which apparently is nothing that I can’t do or haven’t already done for myself.

Don’t get me wrong. I think at the right time these guys would be great assets to my career. But at this point in time for myself, agents would only be good for a couple things: arranging a contract and getting me into meets. Since I’ve pretty much already set up my outdoor season, I don’t need them for that. As for arranging a contract, it turns out that although my win was a great performance, sponsors are not looking for weak one-time flashes. It was a great race for me, but let’s face it: it’s not like I beat Lagat in a record time.

Basically, I just have not run fast enough consistently to warrant anything more than gear, travel, and time bonuses that are paid out at the end of the year.

And sorry, but I am not settling for shoes and singlets just yet.

So, it’s back to performance. The blog goes on. Still looking to fulfill that dream, to compete with the best, to stand out, gain some momentum, to make THIS my JOB.

And I know there are a lot of great runners out there. A lot of names vying for attention, for wins, for glory. Right now I am just another name in the midst of that frenzy. But you can bet you’re a** that I will do everything in my power to make them remember one name.

My next interview is Brutus Hamilton on April 25th.

Dear David,

You're talented and tough. I've watched you at Brutus, in Pac 10 meets (UCLA alum) and of course, at the 2009 US Indoors-lite.
FYI: Agents' names, contact information, websites and a list of their clients can be found on the USATF Agent Directory and the IAAF Agent Directory.
A one-year bonus deal w/ travel and merchandise with one of the Big 2 is what I'd advise; w/ one of the Big 2. After the year, if you've shown marked improvement, the company may sign you. In the meantime (the year you're under contract) you have the "juice" of the company behind you. It matters; for getting starts in meets, invites, etc. The key to the one-year deal with the current company is that you'll have the company behind you when you want to get into U.S. meets. Also, w/ the travel $ you'll be able to go Europe, pay for an apartment/dorm, have some money for food, travel, run the "B" circuit and make some money; assuming you run well.
Proudly toiling away without a contract is not the way to go in 2009; especially in this economy, which will take some time to recover (likely 5 years). And, as a distance guy, you know who's coming out next year: Rupp, Barringer and a few others. Even the Big 2s' budgets are strained. Take the bonus deal while you can get it. It may not be there next year.
I do agree w/ you on one point (pint): as a Cal grad (I'm a proud Pac 10 alum), you don't need an agent to do what you're currently doing. Now, if you beat Lagat, Webb, or Ramzi, (consistently) you'll need an agent; sorry, one-time flukes don't count.
Sincerely,
Rivera the Agent

Great job David. Don't compromise anything! Keep doing what's gotten you to this point. A USA title is a USA title. No one can take that away from you. You have a great coaching staff and a handful of great athletes to train with that will surely help you get to that coveted CONTRACT! Stay hungry and when possible take advantage of those photo ops (smile!)...I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're one of the most tough-minded individuals that I have ever met...as long as you back it up with disciplined hard-work there is no stopping you. Good luck and I'll be cheering you loudly.

David, I never knew you existed in this world until I watched the USA Indoor Champs and saw you win the 3k (well the ending of it). I doubt you will get a contract (well, anything more then 5,000 a year). The main reason is because nobody knows you, I mean not enough. With Shoe companies its not so much how fast of times you run, its how marketable you are. , go on letsrun and start posting on there, make people talk about you so then maybe you are known outside of your college aged friends, might actually be your best bet. It sucks because if you didn't do something big in college, its almost impossible to get something outside of college. Swallow your pride and go join Zap or something.

A couple things to clarify:

1. I've already spoken as to why I don't wish to join a club at this time. I want to give myself a chance this year to make it work, and keep things consistent, as opposed to uprooting myself and changing things during a World Championship year. However, if things do not work this year, then I am more than willing to go somewhere and get some more support.

1a: Also, I've spoken with the representative from Team Strands, and after learning what they can offer me, I've decided to forego that option since the contract and level of support was lower than what I would have liked. And again, I feel like my stock is going to keep rising and wouldn't want to get locked into anything for a year when more lucrative offers might be available later on.

2. Believe me, if I felt that it was right to do so, I would have worn my "Your Ad Here" jersey, but the truth of the matter is that Transports has been providing me with spikes, shoes, gear, and a little bit of travel money. That actually adds up to a decent amount of paper over the past 7 months. However, the difference between this and a contract with somebody, is just that: the CONTRACT. I am in no way bound to Transports, but I just felt that I should do the honorable thing and show them some support like they've shown me. But I DO think it would have been badass if that picture above had "Your Ad Here" on my chest.

3. I'm not feeling bad for myself at all. I knew what I was getting into the moment I kept training after the trials last year. I knew it was going to be a struggle, and I knew that it was not going to be easy in any way shape or form. But I love doing this...training/racing/competing, so why pass up an opportunity to go after your dream?

Thanks for all the criticisms/suggestions/support everybody. They all serve their purpose.

Question   April 3 at 10:44pm
if you aren't ready to settle for shoes and a singlet just yet, why were you in Adidas Transport stuff at USA's. You do realize that is a club and you are wearing a brand, so companies are going to think that you have support. Don't feel bad for yourself. There are a lot of runners with higher credentials that you, ie: Olympics trilas finalist that have jack $h!!. It is a tough time to land a contract.

david, you will undoubtedly learn that its not what you do after college, its what you do IN college that will get you sponsored. Your times are great, but as you said yourself, indoor nationals this year was down. my honest suggestion is to find a club to join, because you will undoubtedly find yourself in the same position come post-USA's. best of luck.

You should team up with Jack Daniels. That way he has a job and you have an agent/coach. That would be pretty sick if that actually worked.

Yeah you could join a team like Zap fitness, you would get a house, free running equipment, free coaching, free travel, and free agents, if you were accepted by them and if you were a Zap fitness elite.

Maybe you should just join a post-collegiate running group that offers support to runners. You'll give yourself much more time that way. And there are great runners in such groups. Such as McMillan Elite and others of the sort.

Or do you have too much pride for that, too?
