Stargazing

Hey Everyone,

This is going to have to be a quick one. My computer availability has been compromised for a day or two but I wanted to sneak in a quick post.

Last night was quite an event. I'm so glad that I went and participated in the Opening Ceremonies. Between transportation, staging, marching, and the end of the ceremony it's about a 6 hour commitment for the athletes. But it was so worth it! I think the best way for me to describe my experience being a part of it all is that I felt like a stargazer... in so many different ways. It was a night of meeting the stars including a huge group of world-class USA team members, the President and some of his family, a ton of amazing athletes from different countries, and not to mention the open sky above us as we all stood together for the first time in the Olympic Stadium. It was an experience of a lifetime.

Only two downfalls to the whole experience (and they are totally worth it). It was insanely hot. We were dressed in our wool get-up for the whole six hours and by the end we all looked like we had gone swimming in them. We also didn't get back to the village until about 1:30am. I grabbed a quick bite to eat in the dining hall and then fell into bed after a quick shower.

It was unbelievable the amount of people that were in the stadium and also the amount of athletes that were gathered in the infield. I was split two ways between feeling like I was a big part of something wonderful but also it made me realize how insignificant my single role in athletics is when gathered with the masses. I'm so proud to be here and it is the greatest accomplishment of my athletic career. But, I'll never forget how many people I was surrounded by on that infield that very possibly have that very same sentiment.

Jenny--We are so proud of you and so excited for your opportunity. We cheered when we even caught a glimpse of you during the opening ceremony! Enjoy your experience and "run like the wind." Your family in Colorado is praying and so very proud of you!

Jenny:

Your apparent "Man, oh man!" expression/comment when entering the "Bird's Nest" and looking up was priceless! Like I've always said, getting there and thoroughly enjoying the experience is the prize for your hard work, commitment, and lifestyle of integrity. Anything else is icing!

Keep savoring the moments and then get ready to run like the wind next weekend! It was truly a joy to see your big smile and excitement as we watched you march in the opening ceremonies. The wonders of dvr let us rewind and pause to see our "little girl from Oviedo." You do us all proud in central Florida... make that all of America!

Jenny,
We were in Spencer at Barringers. I set up their DVR to record the opening ceremonies and the next day, replayed the American team coming into the Olympic stadium. When they showed the front of the group they focused on the flag bearer, and right behind him, there you were front and center!! We could pause and go through it in slow motion.
Michelle called us, telling us that she was also watching and literally jumped out of her chair in excitement, in tears of joy. Also the Ralph Lauren web site sent an e-mail promoting their design of the outfits. Again, you could be seen well in the front row. (I'm sure this is not a surprise to you.)
Good luck and rest well in your preparations. The excitement is very palpable.

Jenny,
Congratulations from all your fans in Florida. I remember your 16:55 at Ed Radice as well and was working the chute as a Chip Girl....you were so pumped but made sure to congratulate your competitors as they came in later. You are a class act and we are so proud of you!!! Best Wishes.

Jenny,

Words do not describe what this experience must be like as you well know. Thanks for being such a great role model outside the walls of a stadium to anyone who is willing to pay attention. What you do off the track will have much longer lasting influence and that is what continues to impress me the most about you. I wish you the best of results in your race(s) and am tickled that someday you will be able to turn to your child(ren) and say - "Mommy was in the Olympics".
Sincerely,
Coach H.

With just a few days to go in the dream, stay focused and hydrated! As always, you have exceeded ahead of schedule. From the trips to Indianapolis (2004) to Vancouver (2005) in which we merely went to gain experience for the "next" year, you continued that trend with Eugene (2008) and now Bejing. Looking forward to our next conversation - after the finals! Believe in your training and your Coach (Wetmore) as you have your entire career. Best of Luck - Relax to Run Fast!!

Florida is REALLY proud of you. I remember my sopre year at Ed Radice when you ran 16:55 and beat my time by 2 seconds. I had never been that close to beating THE Jenny Barringer. Look at all the good distance girls in Florida high schools right now. Brasovan, Hale, and Koziara can thank you for proving that Florida girls can be competitive at Footlocker and on the national scene. Good luck in the Steeple and hopefully flrunners.com can get a post-Olympic interview with you.

Jenny we are so very proud of you. Enjoy every moment of this experience. Know that you are one of the "stars" gleaming in our eyes and always have been. The song "Let my love give you wings" says best what we feel...

It's not living if you don't reach for the sky
I'll have tears as you take off
But I'll cheer as you fly

Jen, your beautiful smile lit up the screen last night during the opening ceremonies; you, my dear stargazer, are the star in our eyes right now!

Unfortunately, time will not break down for you, but rest assured that the rush will never leave you; kinda like the first time you stood at the top of the continental divide and looked down . . . you knew you'd never have that moment again, but the feeling is just as strong every time you remember it.
(I'm heading for the fridge to make an avocado, cheese, and tomato sandwich right now. . . that's a blast from my healthier past that I could stand to enjoy more often!)
