Being in Berlin

Jenny Barringer | Profile
August 7, 2009

I moved into the athlete hotel yesterday evening. It's fun to watch the athletes and staff all begin to gather in one place. The atmosphere of the World Championships really begins here in the hotels with the athletes in lounges, playing the wii, typing away on the internet, and physio in the next room. There's nothing like being with the whole team preparing for our events, watching each other race, and just experiencing the whole trip together.

I went out to the track for an easy shake-out today. I'm excited to race tomorrow but I know it's far from my specialties and it's going to hurt a lot differently then my usual events. My understanding is that it's a small meet though so the low-key atmosphere and the presence of both of my coaches should make it a fun event.

Being here in Berlin has been more interesting than I imagined. It's really an incredible city to be in and travel around. There really isn't a central part to Berlin. There are a lot of things to see and a lot of history to learn about and explore but it is spread out all over the city. I've had a lot of fun navigating the subway system with Heather and seeing a lot of the landmarks I briefly scanned in high school history books. I've been reading a little about the history of Berlin including the Prussian history, WWI and WWII, the Wall and the communisty East bloc. This place is rich with reminders and relics.

My 800 is tomorrow in the evening, 5:45 last I heard. So, send me some good vibes and I'll do my best. After that I hope to put up some stories to make you laugh. I'm usually good for a few of those. As for now, I'm about to embark on my first laundry attempt.

-Jen

I live in Colorado Springs and every two years, I travel to Berlin. My favorite city. Go to the Tiergarden. Great place to run. The Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden. If you like the lakes, Müggelsee in East Berlin. Wannsee in the West. The forest is safe to run around. It is a safe city. If you had more time, you could run in the forest in the city. Thanks for before a great embassador to the sport. I am a huge fan of yours and will continue to follow your career.

Hi, Jenny, Grandpa and I watched your race in Stockholm and it was so exciting. Wish you would not scare us like you did in the 2nd to last lap.
We are so proud of you and are praying for you. Have a wonderful time in Berlin. Grandpa and I were there about in 1998. I am sure it has changed since then. It is great that you can do some sight seeing.
You did great is this and last race, broke another CU record. We will be praying for you this next week and hoping to watch the race. We love you . Grandma and Grandpa

2:02 to 2:03 is what I predicted the last time you posted against Jenny. As I said before, she is not an 800 runner and her goal was to best the CU 800 record time of 2:03, which she did.

You, with all of the names your have been posting under, Harry Potter...., should go back to letsrun.com.

You do not seem to be nervous that is for sure. I wish I could learn to be as calm and collected as you. Anyway, great blog. I enjoyed it and it is good to see someone as talented as you represent us. You did great in the 1500m and no doubt in the steeple chase. Do not let the competitive spirit take yours, we can only do our best when we remember why we race! Good luck in the 800m and good vibes your way.

Jenny Barringer, indisputably the most versatile and quite arguably the greatest women's distance runner of the decade, plans to imprint upon another distance merely half-a-fortnight out from the athletics finals in Berlin.

The University of Colorado senior and olympian announced today in a blog on Flotrack that she will run the half-mile at approximately 5:45 tommorrow evening.
Undoubtedly speed work for the American hopeful, she indicates that the 800 is "going to hurt a lot differently then(than) my usual events (steeple, 1500, 5000, etc.)."
One can't help but wonder what kind of time Jenny Barringer is capable of just one week out from championships. Will the Flotrack community go abuzz once more as a sub-two minute performance is challenged yet again this season by an American? Or will Jenny's race be more of a training run?
Scratch that! Scratch that!
I said it yesterday and I'll say it again; Jenny is adding unnecessary pressure to herself by announcing a "low-key" race. When her fans see a blog-- which she rarely does-- we get excited, we start predicting, we become expectant.
Then again, maybe she likes the attention. Maybe it was in her brilliant plan all alone; get the Flotrack community to predict a surreal time (1:55 on one of the below comments) and run it.
If that was your intention Jenny Barringer then good luck tommorow, we are all expecting you break two minutes.
