Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of Circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of Chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

Its funny to me how although KD was the one who didnt qualify he is more understanding than you guys are. Christian Smith ran a better race that day and you should recognize that for what he did. Sure KD may be more consistent but when the moment counted Christian rose to the challenge. Complaining about what should have been doesnt change anything so just suck it up and cheer for America, im sure KD is.

Gracious in victory and defeat. A class act that will always have my respect. And the Ernest Henley poem sets the scene for the larger challenges the guy still has to tackle. Best of luck KD

Christian Smith's listed PR according to the USATF website is in the 1:45s. Last I checked he just ran a 1:48 in Europe... points still relevant and he's going out in the first round.

This is the guy that stands a chance against the young African talent at 800m. This years olympic final will go sub 1:44 and Kaki is going to go out harder than any of the 3 U.S. "finisher" types that we've sent to Beijing. Christian Smith has never gone sub 1:45 and would have gotten 3rd at this years NCAA champs. He'll be gone in the prelims. In summary the U.S. needs to always put it's best athletes on the track and one race cannot decide that. KD should be there.
