Rain thoughts

Nice easy run today in the rain while I thought about training and stuff. I'm trying to remember what it was like to be a freshman. Mainly because their paces are much slower than mine and the feel of hard is a much different concept. 4:36 maybe all out for them and low 4:20's seems to be a regular occurrence for me now when it wasn't always the case. I rarely trained over summer or winter breaks. I do remember being pretty hardcore in just kicking the crap out of myself first couple of races until I got into shape.… more »

Magic Moments

So I had one crazy day today and a bit exhausted, and think I’m getting just a bit under the weather, but somehow I got everything I needed to get done today. Glad I picked today as a recovery day. I read Ryan’s blog post and watched the Monaco races after finishing everything today. I know that feeling he is referring to as the “Magic of the mind” It is that feeling that made cross regionals so Important to me. I think I could list 50 reasons leading up to, the day before, during, and going to nationals after that… more »

Dealing with and preventing Injuries

From doing all these miles I am remembering what cross was like before I got injured. I’m doing 58 miles this week and got in some really quick 5x1200m intervals averaging 4:45pace. Last year the Monday before lighthouse I did this workout, but I only did 4 and I did it with 4minutes rest. My times all positive split with the first one being the quickest in 3:34.6. This time I did it with lots of control, 3minutes rest, and the fastest was the last one even if my second interval had some extra distance. I like intervals better than… more »

The 5k, other athletes and winning, updates

The 5k is definitely a different experience for me. I have always liked running the faster and middle distance events. I think that's why I liked the 3k so much. It was just short enough that I felt like I could still use some speed and not feel as destroyed as a cross race. Wheaton was the only time I ran it, but it felt good and I've always found 2miles to be the longest I would ever go hard. Maybe that comes from doing 2mile time trials. The wheels and heels 5k was the first time I've ever had… more »

Coaching, Engineering, and Training

I have a plan for my training. I kind of plan out the week or do it day by day based off of feel and weekly mileage goals. Right now I'm mainly focused on the 5k and expanding my base from last year. I want to get up to 50-60 miles per week. I ran only 27miles a week during my juror year and even sometimes around there my senior year if I take out the biking that I did. I really have no one to blame but myself if what I'm doing for my training now is wrong. I… more »

New mileage

I've started the task of upping my mileage. I'm planning on hitting a 55mile week. This will be the most I have ever run in one week. I took about 3weeks of build up and backed off a bit last week before getting ready to build up. My easy pace is no longer what most people I know would think of as easy pace. I consistently hit 6:30-6:40 pace every time I run now. One day I ran a 10k at 6:22pace two days before a race and thought did I run too hard? When I ran 6:50pace most of… more »

Pre-season Nerves

I think I'm more nervous than the start of last season when I knew that I would have to replace Gleason and Bourke. I think it comes more from doubting what I'm capable of and the fear of becoming injured due to running much more than last year. I can remember how terrible I felt before Griak at the thought of not being able to run. Week before Griak I hit 52.5 miles before messing up my knee and this week I tied it as my maximum mileage I have ever run in a week. I know this week was… more »
