Beijing Contest & the New New Flotrack

Mark From Flotrack | Profile
June 11, 2008

Ok so I am feeling a lot less stressed writing this blog than the last time I blogged. I do not write any of the code so I felt helpless to your complaints about the New Flotrack. Everybody made so many good points about problems in the new flotrack, but I could not do anything about it. It felt like I was in 5th grade again waiting for my mom to take me to my little league game. I know I told her that my game was at 5:45 pm, but I have no idea if she remembered, and there are only so many times you can pretend you are Mark Grace hitting the game winning home run in your front yard before you start to worry that she will not get home in time.

Well the guys behind the scenes have been great and have been working their buts off to fix your bugs, so I am more relaxed... Basically, I see my mom's car coming down the street.

The brains Truong, James and Madhu, have gotten up everyday since the redesign and gone to the bug page and tried to squash all the bugs everyone has found. It is really important that you continue to write the bugs that you find.

I want to go through a couple of the new features and talk about the Ludus Tours Beijing Contest.

-First, the Contest...... There were about 30 hours where you could not vote, so we are extending the voting deadline until midnight on June 12th. So go to the Ludus Tours Beijing Voting Page and cast your votes.

Ok....some new features/changes.

-Flotrackr is back!

-Locker Room is back!

-The Mileage Counter is back on your profile.

-Running Log is fixed so now you can actually fill in your log! The pace calculator actually takes in seconds and calculates the correct pace. The Running Log is also back on your profile.

-There is a new members page here

-Blogs are back on your profile.

-Shoe Closet is working now....... we think

-Notifications are reduced so you are not bombarded with all of your friends' actvities. (The problem is that I am friends with almost everyone, so whenever I did anything, which is very often, everybody was notified.) Sorry about that.

-Team Files are now back.

-Articles and Blogs are now working.

There is a lot more that I am now forgetting....the point is, we are working hard and listening to your ideas and concerns, so keep them coming.

It should be a good weekend at NCAAs. Ryan is in Iowa and he will be knocking out the coverage with a live blog and video interviews.

Oh wait! I forgot to mention that there is a new ammendment to the Olympic Trials Coverage. We (Flotrack, Letsrun, Runnerspace, everyone else) can now do the mixed zone video interviews. Check out the new rules by the USATF here.

I do not know what happened, but I do applaud the USATF for coming through and changing the rules.

Well thats it for now.

Later,

Mark Flo

"Under no circumstances can anything that resembles or approximates "coverage" (e.g., race calls and other real-time descriptions and accounts of competition) be distributed via the Internet"

Um, so if you post interviews from the mixed zone they must be removed by August 25th? That is an interesting clause, what good does that do anybody?

Waiting on Fenton to see if we have a new one. He was in KC and had some crazy trouble traveling from the Ohio Stat HS track meet. He was working on one but do not know if he could get it done considering the circumstances. If he did get it done he might not have any internet as of right now..... So I am waiting to hear. Will let everyone know if Fenton does not first.

That is great that they are allowing you interview rights, for the new rules it sounds like NBC was the driving force behind not letting the interviews take place in the first place and not USATF. It sounds like NBC just wants the hits on there website and is also afraid of this internet sites leaking results/coverage since you have done live streams in the past. This makes sense from an NBC perspective since they do have a lot of money invested in this and the Olypmics. Anyways I am still shocked yet very happy that a big corporation has actually made a sensible compromise. Kudos to NBC and the USATF.
