Going Green at Hanson's Running Shop

Recently, my wife and I went green and purchased a couple of those hoity toity grocery bags, you know the ones that you can reuse if you remember to bring them back the next time you go. I know I must do better to help out mother nature, but how you might ask?

I have decided to take my greenness to Hanson's Running Shop. We have a store meeting this Thursday and here are a couple of ideas that I am going to bring up to Kevin and Keith to cut costs, save energy, and most important, save the planet.

  1. Eliminate sales receipts. I plan to just use a a ball point pen and write the transaction on the customers hand, arm, forehead, or elsewhere. I bet that if you add it up over a couple of years we would save a tree or two.

  2. Turn the lights off. Every shift that I work, upon clocking in, I plan to turn off all lights inside and out, along with the “open” sign. Then I shall lurk in the dark just waiting for customers. This technique might cut down on customers, but it will cut energy costs, so maybe it will balance out? Either way, I will be blasting the heat/air conditioning because it can get really hot or cold depending on the season, I don't want to get too crazy.

  3. No more toilet paper! The bathroom at the Royal Oak store seems to be a destination stop for a lot of people. From our Thursday night group run, to Pat Rizzo, that thing is busier than a Walmart. I figure we must blow through a 12 pack of toilet paper on a weekly basis. To combat this trend, I am suggesting the use of a community washcloth. It will be pretty clean because I will keep a bucket of cold water right next to the toilet to rinse it out, I promise to have the water changed at least once a week, courtesy of Ryan Sheehan.

  4. Recycled water at our group runs. Now, I don't want to go too far into detail about this one, I haven't exactly refined this process. Let's just say that it involves saving my recycled water for use at the group runs.

I hope that by reading this blog, I have given you the urge to go out and be green. The environment will thank you!
