Getting hit by a Jeep

Patrick Rizzo | Profile
February 25, 2008

Last week was the scariest experience ever for me...and I'm sure it was no better for Nick. Last Monday as we were out for a 14 mile run, Nick and I split off to head down 25 Mile Rd. to add 2 more miles while our roommates had only 12 on the schedule. Of course, this was my idea to take this route. Black ice was covering the road most of the way, but we didn't have any close calls or anything, so we weren't too worried.
As the two of us turned down 25, we saw a silver Dodge Dakota fishtail around the curve and figured he was just being a typical jackass that we've all been or seen. Then I saw a red Jeep Wrangler coming around the same curve sideways right at us on the shoulder (there was no clear sidewalk). I yelled a token "oh shit!" to warn Nick, whose reaction time is apparently WAY better than my own. We had a good 3 feet between us and the road, but black ice is funny. You can't control what happens on it. Nick made a quick dive out of the way and into the snow. I was not so fortunate. I took a hit on my hip and landed on my wrist and same hip (judging be the bruises. I don't remember the hit, only the Jeep coming at us). I skidded most of the way along the road's shoulder on my face. Needless to say, it looks delightful. I was out cold for a good 5 minutes before going another few hours incoherent. About the time we got to the hospital, I was incoherently rambling off some emergency numbers to get ahold of people at home. Nick talked to my family and explained what happened.
Nick wound up staying the whole day at the hospital as I slipped in and out. Don was there the whole time too. I just want to say how literally I owe those two my life. If not for them, I could very well be dead right now and things could have been significantly worse. For now, I'm trying to run again, but there is swelling on my IT band and I have a pretty tight range of motion. Hopefully soon I'll be back into Boston training without missing too much.
For now, thanks to Nick, Don, and everyone who called and checked up on me in the last week. I really do appreciate everything you've all done.
Here's a gratuitous picture of the damage. *Warning, it looks bad*

Good luck coming back. We'll be watching your blog posts for updates.

Patrick, What a rough way to start the week. Glad that you came through okay. Good luck pulling yourself together this next month and a half and look forward to seeing a great result from you in Boston!

Mr. Rizzo, I glad to see that you are basically okay and on your way to hopefully a 100% recovery. My initial reaction when I read Nick's log was, WHAT!!!! As a parent, I am grateful that it was not worse for you or for Nick. As you probably know, Nick had a similar experience with an unmovable tree a few years ago, so I can imagine the anxiety your parents went through. As a matter fact, his mug looked just like yours. He seems to have recovered pretty well, except he does not talk as much. He used to be a really chatty patty. Anyways, KEEP SAFE, out there, none of Hanson Parents ever want to get a bad news phone call. Good luck on your training and competitive season.

Get well soon and God bless you. Does this happen to you guys in Michigan a lot? I would think as a group you guys put in more mileage than any other group in the country so you spend a lot of time on the roads. Has anyone else been hit by a car?

So glad you you made, though it does look really bad. I hit a dog this summer on my bike and ended up with a concussion(yeah 4 hours of my life I don't remember). It is so scary to be in an ER. So I feel a bit of your pain. Get well soon..

Pat, I'm glad you are alive. I hope that you heal quickly! I've had a similar situation with the lack of hip flexibility after an accident, except I crashed on my bike pretty badly. The sports doctor I went to told me to do the following:
8x hip flexor stretches 4-5x a day.
Kneel on one knee, with the other leg bent forward.
While sitting up as straight as possible, push as far forward as you can on the hip that is on the same leg that you are kneeling down on.

Yoga and pilates also help. Good luck!
