The Ice Season
March 28, 2008
Happy (track) season greetings everyone. I'm sure anyone who is reading this is wondering why i titled this blog the Ice Season. Well... I'm no expert on the records in weather, but I'm quite positive that Kodiak, AK has had the Snowiest spring ever. In addition to our ferocious snowstorms the weather has been incredibly inconsistent between cold and semi-warm. As a result of all this meteorological madness our one and only Kodiak Island Track is currently covered with 6 inches of ice and several patches of ankle deep snow.
Now this situation would not be nearly as difficult with the help of some modern technology. However, due to the Parks & Rec directors fear of "destroying" our city's facilities snow plows and four-wheelers are banned from the track. Thus, the track team spends about 15 minutes each day shoveling the snow and chipping the ice. This procedure has not been very effective considering there are more bodies than shovels and if one person is doing nothing suddenly everybody is wishing they were doing nothing. The clearing process is going exceptionally slow and it seems as though the snow is falling faster than we are clearing. But, we will attempt to clear the track little by little in hope of having our intersquad meet next Friday. I hate to be a pessimist but i wonder if we have the wrong meet on our minds. I'm thinking it will be nice to have the lanes clear by our first and last home meet............... in May.
In spite of the negative tone of this blog my first Ice Season has actually been quite fun. Except, for my flight being canceled last week to my track meet in Anchorage; the Ice Season could not be going better. The roads which we have done 95% of our training have suited my style well and my fitness feels good. Today we did a road mile time trial on a course 400 meters of downhill start, 800 meters of flat, then finishes with 400 meters of uphill. I was pleased with my time of 4:29 and feel that I'm set up well for the season ahead. In addition, The Distance squad's attitude has been in general pretty enthusiastic, which is usually quite rare for this early in the season.
In off the ice topic my march madness bracket took a turn for the worse today. Stanford my surprise final four pick got crushed by Texas. As i picked all the other number one seeds i have virtually no chance of winning my pool. Oh well there is always next year. Well that is all for now I'm off to chip some ice.
