And that was that...State AKA The Ships

Well as I pondered my goals for this year's track season at the beginning of the year I came up with two sets of goals. My time goals which were sub 2, 4:15, and 9:10. I also has the dream to join the select few, triple crown champions. And I'm not talking about growing hooves and having a 2 foot long dick and calling myself Seattle Slew, Secretariat, or maybe Big Brown. Oh no I'm talking about the distance running trifecta. The gold medalist in the state 8, the mile, and the deuce. This was a dream of mine ever since last spring when I got kind of stuck in a rut towards the end of the season. Those of you who follow my blogs probably already know how it turned out; Second with an upset of the ages in my 3200 9:13(ended my season with a pr of 9:10 the previous week), First in the 1600 4:15 (Also my Pr), Third in my 800 2:00.2 (Season pr 1:56.2 (read blog sub 2)). So as you can see I reached all my time goals and narrowly missed my "Triple Crown" dream. Here is my rundown of each event.

3200 AKA "The Deuce"
As I have said before and continue to say the 2mile is my favorite event and I always see myself as a distance runner before anything else. As the 2mile season progressed it became apparent that the Alaska 3200 bout would be a two horse race. As I had gotten the better of Jake Parisien the three previous contests in the race I was pretty confident in my chances. In addition my workout on Tuesday paced me in a mile at my deuce pace 4:33, and it felt easy. However my pr was still only a mere two seconds faster than Jakes and I knew it would be a battle. The races were getting more competitive each time and this was NO exception. The weather at Lathrop was a little on the gusty side, as I settled in to the pace of 68 or 69 with Parisien on my shoulder I had the since that this wasnt a good day to go for a fast time. But as stubborn as I was I couldn't just wait for a kick I wanted to make it legit. The first mile was 4:35, and it felt a little harder than my Tuesday workout. With two and a half laps to go Parisien took the lead and I figured I could wait and sit until the last lap. When I went with 500 out he made a burst and I had trouble getting around him, with 300 I was out of gas and he took the lead for good, Jake went on to win in 9:11 to my 9:13.

1600 AKA The Mile
On this run I was out for blood and wanted to make my presence felt on the podium once again. The start was called back due to "physicality" so the second start the party began. At the 800 I found myself at the lead going through in 2:10. Feeling good I went a little bit and dropped everyone with a 63 except for Jake. The last lap I knew I had gears left and I just kept thinking of those quarter repeats when I was tired and could still turn out 62s and 63s. I burned a 62 to crack the race wide open and pr in 4:15.7. Jake finished nobly in 4:20. Revenge was sweet.

800 AKA "The Half"
For the half I wasnt the most confident to be honest. My chief competitor Kevin Smith was fresher than a daisy and I just haven't ever really considered myself an 800 runner. Coming into the race I knew from my prelims that Kiefer and Smith would be my main comp. The 57 first lap set by Kiefer felt good. With 100 meters to go I just didnt have the right raw speed to go with Smith and Kiefer when the real race began. However I was proud of myself to shut to the door on Remington when the West Valley runner attempted to pass me with 50 to go for third. I finished back like my old self with a 2:00.2.

All in all I was proud of my season and thought it was a success. I got all my time goals and had a gold a silver and a bronze at state. My times finished with number 1 state rankings in all of the races as a little consolation. There is always next year to get the trifecta. Until then I can't honestly be called a Stallion and will have to settle for the Workhorse!
