Track and Field Blogs - Trevor Dunbar
9:01.4
Coming into this weekend my confidence was soaring as daily runs were feeling amazing and on my workouts despite the snowy conditions were producing some of the faster times that I have ever done. The plan for Saturday was to race a 3200 meter time trial just to stay sharp and have a decent venue to perform at because you never know when you can hit a patch of ice on the trails. I was so curious to what kind of time I could turn out; I knew I was in better shape but the external factors I figured would slow me down. My prediction for the race was 9:10, and I thought that would be ambitous.
I woke up on Saturday morning feeling exceptional and ready to roll. I endulged myself with a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch and a vanilla yoghurt, then sat back and watched some college football. When the time came I went into the den and went through all my singlets and shorts to decide the perfect combination. This process usually takes me forever, so I was lucky to get an early start. When I had the uniform all prepared I then realized I hadn't put thought into the spikes. After long contemplation I chose my battle tested Nike Ventulus 2's over my new adidas "racing flats with spikes" in a close contest. After all the other rituals were complete I through on my jacket got in my car and headed out to the track on the frigid 27 degree afternoon.
To my delight a tireless group of fans and friends were already at the track working on shoveling lane one to help me go for a fast time. Once Sam Salus finally arrived we were ready for the fun to begin. I went out in 69 for the first lap and it felt effortless. The snow was timed perfectally to start falling right when our race started and was relentless in its pursuit to blind the runners. My desire to go out hard was going great when I passed through the first mile in 4:31. To my surprise I would end up negative splitting. My mvp for pacework was definately awarded to Jordan foster as he took the the crucial 4,5 laps through in a brilliant 2:15. Going into the last lap my lungs were begging for oxygen and my legs screamed mercy. Ignoring those demons once again I surged hard into the snow when I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. The last 100 meters went by in a blur as I lifted my knees and glided through the finish line in a jaw dropping 9:01.4. My last lap was a 65. My lungs gave me a slap in the face shortly afterwards burning from inhaling all the cold air. However, it was all well worth it and I think it was truly a team effort. I want to officially thank all the fans that came out to support me or any loony fans dedicated enough to make it to the end of this rediculously long blog. Haha I can't believe I even went through which cereal I ate; My secret is out, its all about the cinnamon toast crunch.
My calculus homework awaits me, take care running world!
