USADA and the supplement cloud...
May 7, 2009
the line between legal and illegal should be in plain sight and it should be blatant. but today, in our sport, it's cloudy.
i agree whole heartedly with shannon's take on PED's and USADA.
no one is offering advice or counseling on the matter. i take protein, a multivitamin, and pre-workout amino acids. i have been taking the same thing for 3 or 4 years now and have been tested around 30 times (give or take 5) in and out of competition. i love the product and trust in the results i've seen and experienced. but, i still have to… more »

i had a conversation with my strength coach yesterday during the inauguration. "what an amazing time to live in." unless you were born after 1990, you might remember a time when there was no internet, no AOL, no cell phones, etc. it was cool to think about how i can tell my kids where i was when barack was sworn in... training in a sweaty gym for the world championships in berlin.
also, today we can log on to flotrack and follow whoever and whatever meet we wish... BF (before flotrack) you had to imagine what races must have looked… more »

whoa, track is back...
December 9, 2008
hey guys, happy to be back and happy to be see that indoor track is right around the corner. the guys at UT have started doing technical work and it's hard not to jump in and do some it with them. i love indoors, but sadly, i am going to sit this one out. i had a long outdoor season without much a what you would call a "base" last year and i don't plan on running thin come august this go round.
i've had a busy fall. first of all, i got a DOG!! his name is dignan (bottle… more »

before i get this started, everyone needs to open up a new tab and go to www.jhern.com thanks!
Olympic Village- ok, it’s been a busy week over here in Beijing. i haven’t really even had a good chance to get some good videos done. but the good news is that training is going great! on the track, we’re just doing some things to sharpen up my timing; in the field, we’re fine tuning some cues to make sure my coach and i are on the same page. there will be about 29 rows of seats, 9 lanes of track, and… more »

i have left north america for the first time in my life. i am officially 13 hours from US Central time. there hasn't been anything to traumatic so far, except the 11 1/2 hour flight from san francisco to beijing. but that was a small price to pay for the priviledge. the chinese are pulling out all of the stops. putting on a smile with every task they perform. in the village, i've seen more volunteers and workers than i have athletes and coaches. the size of the city is hidden by the sleepy bus rides and greenery around the… more »

my sister recently gave birth to a 7lb 15oz little man. i'm an uncle! so with the trials, my sister having a baby, beijing preparations, moving apartments, and training all happening from july 1st to the 29th... i'll be pretty busy.
i'm trying not to lose sight of the forest because of the trees, but sometimes it can seem overwhelming. there are minute details that provide a certain level of comfort that you're accustomed to when you travel or compete. well, i am learning, when you go to china on someone else's bill, those things go by the wayside and… more »

thanks to all of you who have supported me, read my blog, or just pointed me out and said, i know that guy if you saw me. it all means a great deal and helped me through a rough off-season. i love you all!!

half-way home... i'm sitting in my hotel lobby about to be picked up by my trainer to get some work done and big dinner... so i thought i'd post.
just a couple things i have to say for now:
eugene fans are amazing! they actually like decathletes!
i feel great, better than i thought i'd feel.
my overall day was good, but not one performance was out of this world so- there's more to hope for down the road.
i just have to get a good night's sleep and be myself tomorrow and i'll have a shot to make the… more »

went up to dallas this past weekend for the Texas Greatest Athlete Multi-events meet.? did 3 events my coach and i felt like we needed to work on: long jump, high jump, and 110 hurdles.
the meet was set up to be a last chance olympic trials qualifier for some and others, like myself, could come and compete in a selected number of the events.? it was held at St. Mark's School of Texas, which is the most rediculous high school campus i've ever been to.? it was like a small college.? the facilities in most cases were nicer than… more »
i want to carry McDonnell’s whistle strap...
May 27, 2008
this whole thing is getting blown out of proportion and this article made no sense to me... but then again, it is a NW Arkansas regional publication.
taken from wholehogsports.com
It has been four days since the story appeared about John McDonnell being told he could not be an assistant coach on the U. S. Olympic track team because he has coached international athletes.
After chewing on it, there has been just no letting go of that slap in the face to McDonnell, even though he totally took the high road.

well, i've only got one (two at the absolute most) meets till eugene. i've just been sitting and waiting. the trials can't get here fast enough. and the usatf seding about two emails a week concerning housing and travel to and from eugene and beijing doesn't help that fact. but that's the worst of my problems at the moment, which is a blessing. my hip feels great, i'm getting in a lot of technical work, and my form is coming around. i'm stronger, healthier, more flexible, and we haven't even tapped into the explosive stuff on the track and in… more »

well, the weekend is coming to a close. i hope every has enjoyed a lovely easter weekend. it was sunny, hot, and fun here in austin.
the meet yesterday went well. it was my first real competition in about a year. i vaulted, hurdled, threw discus, and ran a leg on a 4x400.
vault: warm-ups the winds were weird. kinda swirly and mainly a nice head/cross. but as the comp worn on (40 vaulters), i managed a first attempt clearance at my opening bar 4.75m on a pretty big stick for me from 5… more »

starting to get excited for outdoors... indoor worlds is over, ncaa's is this weekend, and starting to get hot here in austin!
began doing some tests to see where my power and technique is compared to years' passed. i'm still not as explosive as i would be after a good indoor season, but i'm far more powerful. i threw the discus today and set it up like a competition(only taking three throws) and two of them were well over my pr!! i'm starting to feel some adrenaline in practice and am really letting go and getting after… more »

October 3, 2007
i don't know if you can classify it as such, but i've been trying to go to bed for almost 3 hours. black. complete silence. a cool 73 degree room. the only thing that keeps me from dreaming something really awesome, that i don't even know about yet, is rehearsal. it's a habit i get into the nights before competition. but not in the fall. which is why i'm writing this. i go over each event in the decathlon one by one, mentally practicing it as if it were about to happen. i get goose bumps and adrenaline rushes all… more »

i get it... i need to be more attentive to where i place my feet!! monday afternoon, after my warm-up laps, i lost my footing where the grass meets the south apron at mike a. myers stadium. my foot rolled over and i sustained a mild ankle sprain, again! >:(

you know how once in a while a song comes along, you just hit the repeat button, try your darndest to learn the words; you just can't get enough of it, every run you go on, you seem to repeat the same bars of the song over and over. well... yeah, someone finally brought back some daft punk and i feel like i'm into it waaaaayyy too much. yesterday, taking the weekend off from ACL, i sat on my couch, watched football, and learned the song on the guitar. doesn't sound bad on acoustic, but with a little distortion... nice.… more »

i would guess that a significant portion of the flocasts subscribers are now headed back to school in the coming weeks, if they haven't already. not to get nostalgic, but i am going to miss classes. well, maybe not classes, but definately the schedule/ regimen it throws you into. it's so easy to go from practice to class or class to practice once you're into your semester rythym. before you knew it, it was december and you were in great shape and finished with finals. i loved it. oh well, i'm sure i'll do just fine without research papers, cases… more »

another week down, another week of work put into the bank. my strength coach, Trey Zepeda, has moved me into a totally different phase of training. this week was fun, but painful at times. the sets and reps were totally different than anything i've been used to. this week i have been very familiar with the term AMRAP, or As Many Reps As Possible. each week that goes by brings me that much closer to the olympic trials and beijing.
i just need to keep making deposits.

August 10, 2007
well, my last season at Texas was a long one. even though i only competed indoors, every week seemed like an eternity. indoors couldn't get over fast enough and my wrist couldn't heal any quicker.
all that's over now.
i've settle in to a new place a few blocks from the track, and i'm on my own. starting fresh. i've been in the weight room 3 times a week and going for 30 minute runs twice a week. this pales in comparison to what many of you are doing, but for me, it's a huge… more »
