Building an aerobic base

Austin Waldrop | Profile
July 8, 2009

For the last month I have been putting in mileage in the morning and occassionally doing a second daily run. When I do not do 2nd runs I complement my morning run with an afternoon long swim or a bike ride at an easy "heart healthy" pace. what does anyone else think about this? Will it help to boost my aerobic base? It does not seem to effect my runs at all . But I feel it helps to develop other muscle groups.

I don't think XT will hurt your base, but I would stick to pure running as the best way to boost the aerobic capacity. Gradually / cautiously, and alternate efforts / volume so that you allow your body to adjust to the demands. Keep on building that engine before you go into any hard stuff... and of course, rock those weekly long runs. Research about Arthur Lydiard's theories. You will see how the long-term development of the aerobic capacity is the most important aspect to reaching your true potential. Good Luck!
