World Half
October 9, 2009
While Cooling down my last workout I passed a UPS truck. Normally this would be a pretty ordinary occurrence but today I started sprinting after the truck. Luckily the truck stopped pretty quickly at a house and I was able to ask the driver if he had a package for me. That package contained my Passport that my wife over-nighted to me from Chico.
Now I am ready to go to Birmingham.
I know a lot of people are excited to see what Dathan Ritzenhein can do. How could you not be? This is his first race since he broke… more »
The Dope Show
April 30, 2009
Yesterday the shocking news came out that Rashid Ramzi is dirty. My favorite article about the incident is the one on the NBC sports website with a picture of him licking his medal. ( http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/30458294/ ). That picture reminds me of the little kids I grew up with who would lick a cookie to ensure that no one else would eat it. Its like Ramzi was saying "its mine, don't touch." Usually when a kid licked the cookie, it wasn't actually theirs... no different here.
I hate Performance Enhancing Drugs for several reasons but the number one publicized reason for… more »
Three races down
April 28, 2009
My early season efforts have consisted of a 13:56 10th place finish at Carlsbad, a 3:41 win in front of the hometown (Chico) crowd and a 13:30 at Cal Berkeley. I think i'd have to give myself a C, A and B (respectively) averaging out at a B for the "preseason." While I want to do my best every time that I step to the line, I'm happy with the spot I'm in right now. I am set up very well for the regular season which will start off at The Adidas Track Classic in Carson, CA.

5k on a Yellow Track
April 22, 2009
There is a game that American distance runners play every year. It is called "pick the best early season 5k." This year I went with the wild card at Brutus Hamilton. It was a hard choice given that I ran a good 5k last year at Mt. Sac and that I have never run at Stanford with out coming away with a P.R. Given that Mt. Sac was a great race I may have already lost the "pick the best early season 5k" game but I am still excited about my race on Friday.
This will be my first time… more »
Back on Track
April 13, 2009
Some times it is impossible to understand why things work the way they do. I felt like I was in great shape going into Carlsbad and was eager to take on some of the worlds best. I ended up leaving Carlsbad with my tail between my legs after being so far back that I didn't even see the leaders finish. I went up to Chico with no expectations and just hoped not to get beat up again and I ended up running a PR and taking down one of the best Milers in the country. If I'm not mistaken I… more »
Carlsbad
April 5, 2009
In a quote that was my first "Quote of the day" (I got about 5 text messages letting me know that I'm famous) I said I hope I don't get annihilated on the course at Carlsbad. Well I think annihilated might actually be a good way to put it.
I felt great going through the mile in 4:15 hanging right with the leaders. Then after the first turn around I put in a move to be around 3rd or 4th place. Soon however it started to hurt. It didn't necessarily hurt more than any of my other races in the… more »
Almost there
March 25, 2009
Track is almost here and it is time to get serious. That means it is time for me to write a blog.
I just got back from a trip to visit my aunt and grandparents in Wisconsin. It was great to get some family time in before my schedule gets more hectic than it already is. Audrey (my fiancee) was on spring break so she was able to go along as well. It was the first time she had been to Wisconsin.
Now I'm back and starting to gear up for the season. Workouts are getting faster and I have… more »
Training
February 12, 2009
There is a lot happening in the world of running right now and I am avoiding all of it. I am in the middle of my third week with team Running USA and I am getting fit. I have been doing workouts with the crew and turning my body into a finely tuned machine.
I'm not proud to admit but until the last few weeks I have avoided the weight room, been pretty lazy with core routines, rarely stretched and never had a massage. Everything is different now, we meet at the gym 6 times a week and rotate through… more »
New Years Celebration
January 2, 2009
In the first minutes of 2009 I did something that I will never forget. I made a terrifying decision that I could not reverse. I proposed to my girlfriend Audrey Allas.
Luckily she said yes and is now my fiancee. Both her family and mine were present to witness the event and she hasn’t taken off the ring since.
Audrey and I have been dating for about 2 and half years now. We started dating with in a few weeks of her arrival in Chico and knew very early on that it was something special. She brings out the best… more »
Cold
December 15, 2008
Throughout my life I have never been as cold as I was at the USATF Club Cross-Country Championships this weekend. Slippery Rock was warm and toasty compared to Spokane. When I was racing I couldn't believe that I was actually subjecting myself to this pain. What was I being punished for and why was my punishment so cruel and unusual?
That said, the race went well. My legs felt great from the start but quickly into the race I realized that I made the rookie mistake of not tying my shoes tight enough. I stopped to try to fix the… more »
One More Race
December 11, 2008
I've got one more race to cap off a crazy year. Since my embarrassing Olympic Trials I haven't lost a race and it would be great to go out on top again at Saturdays USATF Club Cross-Country Championships.
The Field is pretty good with Hansons, OTC, McMillan and Zap all entered. This will be the first time I have ever raced Brian Sell.
The competition is going to be pretty tough but maybe not as tough as the weather. It is going to be pretty gnarly in Spokane this weekend. I thought I got the worst of it for the… more »
Nationals and Whats next
November 26, 2008
I had more fun at this national championships than I have at any others. The Chico team seemed much more relaxed and we were able to just have a good time all week as well as on race day. We had our lowest point total ever as well as our most All-Americans ever. We also got to tour Pittsburg on Thursday and take over a bowling alley the night after the race.
I'm a firm believer that Cross-Country should cover all surfaces and conditions. I think that the National Championships should rotate all over the country and that the World… more »
Regionals Fiasco and One More Race
November 16, 2008
As many of you know there was quite a fiasco at the West Regional championships a few weeks ago. I'll do the best to give a short explaination from my perspective.
About a mile and three quarters into the race we were supposed to make a sharp turn left and we didn't. I didn't even see the turn because the way we were supposed to go was blocked by fans and flags but after 20 or so seconds I knew something was wrong. I kept my composure and just figured that when my team was jogging the course the days… more »
3 weeks 300 miles
October 30, 2008
I am nearing the end of the biggest training block of the season and I feel great. Two weeks ago I ran my first 100 mile week of the year. I structured it like this:
Week 1: 5 am, 10 pm Monday; 15 pm Tuesday(3 mile warm up, 10 mile tempo, 2 mile cool down); 5 am, 10 pm Wednesday; 12 pm Thursday; 6 am, 12 pm Friday (workout); 10 am Saturday; 15 am Sunday
Week 2: 12 am, 6 pm Monday; 5 am, 10 pm Tuesday (workout); 6 am, 10 pm Wednesday; 6 am, 6 pm Thursday(travel), 8 am… more »

October 5, 2008
Two races in two straight weekends and my final Collegiate Cross-Country regular season is over. I will not be racing again until conference and that is the start of the post season. Two wins isn't a bad way to do it either.
Stanford was the first of the two and it was a great way to start the season. This was the 8th time that I had run the Stanford Invite and in that span I have only run the same course twice. Each year the course has gotten flatter but as we learned this year, that doesn't necessarily mean… more »
It's Go Time
September 26, 2008
The first race of my final College Cross-Country season goes off tomorrow. I am excited and can't wait to see where my fitness is.
In the last few weeks our team has had a few tough workouts. Last Tuesday we did 4 miles of two minutes at race pace followed by 1 minute (still) rest where I averaged 4:40 miles and followed by a full mile (uphill) in 4:45. Brendan (Scanlon) was very close and the rest of the top group was between 15 and 20 seconds behind him.
Last Friday the team did a 10 mile tempo where I… more »
Cross-Country!!!!!!!!!
September 8, 2008
Cross Country is here and it is time to get excited. This will be my last collegiate cross country season and it could also be the best. This will be my third week of workouts as I try to catch up to my team and the rest of the NCAA who; for the most part, had the whole summer to train.
Our season was kicked off by a weeklong camp by Lake Tahoe before school started. This gave the team a chance to congregate after a summer spent spread out in various locations, as well as a chance to meet… more »
Much needed break
July 14, 2008
My longest break since the last USATF Championships (where I took a week of and a week really easy) was four days after the Chiba Ekiden. I also took three days off after USA Cross and two days off after Stanford and a few other random days off. I haven't run a step since I finished cooling down after the Trials.
Coming into the trials I still had high hopes though. I had strung together a few good workouts and was ready to have a decent race. I wasn't ready to have the race of my life however and if… more »
John Chaplin
July 3, 2008
I don't really want to get too in depth with this but I figured I'd go on the record (or whatever posting a blog is) in saying that I had a relatively bad experience with John Chaplin last year.
I believe I was the 21st athlete in the 5000 last year in a race where they said they were going to allow 18 athletes. I was hoping a few athletes would scratch the 5000 since the 10000 was the day before but since they didn't really have any reason to scratch they didn't bother just incase they wanted to run… more »

June 30, 2008
So the trials have started and I have been escaping the madness by staying in Chico but today I will join the party. My flight leaves at 1:55 from Sacramento and I will fly over Oregon for a Layover in Seattle before heading down to Eugene. I am super excited to get there and watch the races this evening.
After that there are two dead days where my sole task will be keeping myself from going insane thinking about my own race. So far I have done a good job of not really getting too nervous, hopefully I can continue… more »

June 8, 2008
Sorry everyone for the lag in my blogs (to everyone that reads this anyways, Hi Mom!).
I guess I've taken a little vacation from flotrack but its hardly a time to take a vacation from running. My last race was the NCAA DII Championships where I snuck away with a 5000 meter title. I've run 2 5k's this year (assuming you don't count the trial race at nationals) and neither of them have sat well with my stomach. Maybe I'm allergic to Mt. Sac or something but for whatever reason my insides just don't like me very much towards the… more »
Finals and Championships
May 19, 2008
Everything is coming to an end here for Chico State. I have two finals tomorrow and two Papers to write and then I will get on a bus with the team down to Mt. Sac for NCAA's. It will be a busy week and I shouldn't be taking time to write a blog but blogs are easier to write than papers.
Recovering from track 10k's are hard. I don't know what it is about them, I guess our bodies aren't meant to run 25 laps on rubber with thin little spikey shoes but I always feel like… more »

The Payton Jordan meet is an awesome experience every year. This year was beyond anything that I had seen before though. First off, it was so awesome that people didn't have to pay to get in and the only place that was off limits to spectators was the track itself. This made for a great atmosphere for the races, which were awesome as always.
My race was as perfect for me as any races are. The pace got out a touch slow which was certainly in my favor. We were a bit afraid that the pace might… more »

Mt. Sac, The present and... the future.
April 23, 2008
Mt. Sac was this weekend and for anyone that was there or has looked at the results since you know that it was once again an awesome track meet. We drove down on Wednesday and most of the Chico runners ran in B sections on Thursday night. Lindsay and Brendan ran great 10k's and Dinora ran an awesome PR in the steeple despite stopping 200 meters early.
My race was late Friday night and was much anticipated. We were right on the heels of an awesome women’s race and the guys had a lot to live up… more »

Track Time
April 15, 2008
This weekend was one crazy weekend. As many people have known for a while, we here at Chico decided to ramp up our Twilight meet and make it a distance carnival with competition from around the country. I would like to think that we were successful. We had 29 provisional qualifiers and 4 automatic qualifiers for the D2 champions in Walnut later this year.
On the first night I was really impressed with the men's steeple and the women's 800 and 3000. The weather was perfect and a number of people booked tickets to nationals in these… more »

Big work out plus Mile Saturday
April 8, 2008
It took me about a week to recover from World Cross (the travel in particular) and I am getting back in form for the track season which is coming oh so quickly. Last Tuesday I did a 400 work out on the track to wake my legs up from the flight. The work out was 10 by 400 with the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th repeats being Hot, Gary likes having the team do these workouts and I wanted to get right back into workouts after the trip to try to revive my legs as fast as possible. That said… more »

I got in yesterday at around 5 pm and went for a run with Amy, Ryan, Josh, James, and Renee. My legs felt really good considering I was in planes for so many hours. I was really worried about how cold it was going to be here but its really nice. The sun is out right now and its probably between 40 and 50 if not warmer which is great running weather.

In a couple of hours I will head off to the airport for the long journey to Edinburgh. I am really excited for my second Team USA appearance and my first trip to Europe. My bags are packed and I've checked at least 8 times to make sure that my passport is in the same place that I left it.
I don't feel any pain at all in my foot anymore and work outs have gone pretty well. Last Thursday I did 8 1/2 miles out in the park with 1 minute recovery in 2:26,2:21,2:25,2:24 (all slightly uphill) 2:20,2:20,2:18,2:17… more »

So, Dathan is off the team and he will be replaced by Jon Pierce. Losing Dathan is tough but Jon is racing well and he will have an amazing oportunity in a couple weeks. March 5, 2008
Making the world team was goal for early in the season and I am extremely happy to have accomplished it, but... it certainly made my season a touch more complicated. I am well rested from USAXC and my legs have come around and feel better than ever, now it is time to build for the important stuff. This weekend I did a really short speed maintenance work out on the track (2,2,3,2,2,3 in 30,29,45,29,30,43) and I was pleased: it was nice to dip under 60 second pace for the first time in a long time.

Audrey and I took our first plane flight together (how cute) on Valentines day so that I could run the USAXC Champs this weekend. We were greeted at the airport by her parents Rob and Carolyn, her brother David and his fiancée Melissa who had been engaged for only a matter of hours. This was very exciting, especially for Audrey and her family but when we got to Audrey's house we all settled down and went to bed because it was rather late.

San Diego this Weekend
February 12, 2008
For weeks now I have been looking forward to this weekend. Not for the race itself but because I wanted to get out of Chico where it has been around 40 degrees and raining which in my oppinion is some of the worst weather imaginable. (I know I'm completely spoiled compared to all you Midwesterners that have to deal with 0 degrees and wind and ice). That has changed and the weather is unbelievably nice throughout the state of California including Chico.
That means I have to change my focus to the race itself. I hoping this… more »

Dear Johnny
January 26, 2008
The following blog is in response to the comments by Johnny Maguire:
Your observations about elite runners are definitely accurate and I'm not going to try to defend myself or elite runners. I have only done two major road races in my life and at one of them I wandered around like an idiot for about a half hour after the race looking for my parents to take me home and the other time I spent about 20 minutes in the elite runner area and then left to go eat, long before the last of the runners… more »

Spirit of the Marathon
January 25, 2008
Last night I went to the showing of The Spirit of the Marathon in Chico with a bunch of the team. It was really inspiring and entertaining and it made me think about my place in running and what running means to other people.
First, it was wonderful that there was a documentary made about running distributed across the country in the way that this was. Even though virtually everyone that saw this was probably already within the running community, it was still nice for everyone to get together and appreciate what we share. Running press usually… more »

Not So Silent Night
December 9, 2007
On Friday I took the girlfriend to Not So Silent Night in San Francisco (A yearly concert put on by the radio station 'Live 105'). My favorite performers were Spoon and Modest Mouse but the highlight of the night was seeing Audrey's face light up during when she saw Jimmy Eat world take the stage for the first time. The other performers: Paramore and Angels and Airwaves were entertaining but I can't believe that Paramore was nominated for a Grammy. My ears are still ringing. Soon I am either going to have to either stop going to these things or… more »

The Chiba trip was an amazing experience and I learned quite a bit. I'm finally getting over the jet lag from the 10 hour flight back to the states last saterday. It was my first international trip for any reason, let alone running.

First Blog
November 1, 2007
It is a little weird to have your first blog be at the end of a season but it is what it is. 2007 was an amazing year for me that started with a 34 second PR in the 5k in February and is ending with my first Team USA team in November. When I went to college I had goals of breaking 29 and breaking 14 and being a professional/semiprofessional runner by the time I graduated. However, once I got here I improved at a rate far faster than I had anticipated and I’ve already reached my original goals… more »
