Training for a mile and a 12k at the same time.

Making the world team was goal for early in the season and I am extremely happy to have accomplished it, but... it certainly made my season a touch more complicated. I am well rested from USAXC and my legs have come around and feel better than ever, now it is time to build for the important stuff. This weekend I did a really short speed maintenance work out on the track (2,2,3,2,2,3 in 30,29,45,29,30,43) and I was pleased: it was nice to dip under 60 second pace for the first time in a long time.

So how does one train for a wet-cold-hilly 12k cross-country race and hopefully a sub 4 mile two weeks later? I'm not really sure... but Gary and I are going to give it our best shot. Today will be my last week of cross-country specific training with a work out on our home (brutal) cross-country course. On Thursday Gary is giving me a track work out (5 by 800,300) and it will be nice to run something fast on the track. If everything goes well I will do a low key 3k at our home meet this weekend. Next week I will be focusing on strength with a 10 mile tempo on Tuesday and another workout to be decided later in the week. The week following that is our spring break and after that is the big dance in Scotland. If all goes according to plan I will be stronger and faster than ever.

The mile is April 12th. We have been in contact with a few good runners. Hopefully it all works out, it would be great to run my first sub 4 on my home track but even if I don't get it done hopefully someone else can. If you or anyone else you know is interested in running a mile with me in Chico on April 12th and are qualified let me know.

After The mile I think we are looking at a 5k at Mt. Sac and a 10k at Cardinal. I'm not sure if you guys care about all of this but I have been thinking about this track season for quite a while. Either way, first things first: I have to tear it up in Edinburgh. My parents and girlfriend have their travel itineraries and we are all counting down the days. NCAA division 2 cross-country nationals are crazy every year; I can't even begin to imagine what the World Championships look like.

You should get someone there with a video camera and upload that mile.. It would be cool to see that or see if someone can a work out with you..

Your teammates make NCAA division 2 XC nationals are crazy. I can only imagine how hard it is to train for two different events, I wish you the best of luck and of course you will keep us all posted.
