So, Dathan is off the team and he will be replaced by Jon Pierce. Losing Dathan is tough but Jon is racing well and he will have an amazing oportunity in a couple weeks. We still have a great team and Jon is a qualified replacement. Being from the states our minds are way past cross-country but hopefully everyone is excited for the last cross-country race of the season.

I've hit my first little setback for the spring by straining a tendon in my foot. It was pretty painful on Monday and Tuesday but it seems like the pain is going away. While its a bummer anytime something hurts to run on but luckly this injury was very minor. Its more of a reminder to keep my training within reason this season if I am expecting to last untill July.

Last week I ran a long run on Sunday in the hills, a Fartlek in the hills, one of my be track workouts ever (5 by 800-300, 2:10-45, 2:10-44, 2:08-44, 2:06-44, 2:04-44), a 3k at around 5k pace (8:13), and then another hilly long run... It was a little much and lead to me limping a sulking for a day or two. Gary and I decided that it was probably best for me not to do a 10 mile tempo this week so yesterday I did a short fartlek session and on Sunday I will do a 4.5 mile tempo on dirt.

In other news, I have had Elton Brand on the bench of my fantasy basketball team for the entire season and he better get back on the court soon. I understand that he is injured and that the Clippers have no chance of making the playoffs and that they should focus on the future... But that doesn't help my fantasy basketball team at all.

I hear ya about the shoes. Of course, I am much older, but I have figured out that I am better off with the heavier trainers now days...you know, the real durable shoes like the Addidas Boston Classic and the new Nike Skylons...
the shoe that really hurt me was the Brooks Axion 2.
At first, I thought I was going to like them..lots of mesh..(that's always been a thing with me, when i see a shoe with lots of mesh and not alot of decorative leathery straps all over the place) I know, they are gonna be a good fitting shoe..
But these about killed my feet and I don't know why..thought I had a stress fracture.
I do wear flats when i do my weekly tempo run and I have noticed that these tempo runs do alot for illiminating the soreness that I feel from all the steady mileage....interesting really.
Keep up the great work!

It is certainly a long time to try to hold a peak. I wouldn't say that I'm trying to hold my peak from worlds untill the trials, I am trying to peak at the trials but I would like to also get in some good races before then and to do so I have to get on the track.
I have a love-hate relationship with the track... I can relate to being scared of the track just like you. I am always more beat up the day after track work outs than I am after other workouts. But I love the track and I love going fast, I get hungry to go out there and run some fast stuff on the track so I have to do it every once in a while to stay sane. I certainly got carried away last week though.
Last year was the first year that I extended my track season into the summer and it didn't work out quite like I would have liked it, This year I am hoping to keep my mileage higher throughout the year and only drop it down for some select races (probably worlds, cardinal, NCAA's, and the trials). This means that I am going to try run a sub 4 mile and a fast 5k at healthier miles but if I want to run fast at the trials then I can't back down for every race.

That's a long time to try and maintain a peak? How do you approach that training wise?
I notice you are already doing speedwork on the track.
Do you expand the base more through increasing miles and longer tempos to accomodate an increasing speedwork schedule?
It's funny, in 30 years and 80,000 miles, I have always been scared to death of the track, because of the fear of injuries when I am still months out from my goal race.
Maybe I should have atacked my training more all these years...

Mileage, tempos, long intervals, then I have to say, "reluctantly" on the track as I get within weeks of the goal race. ha
Keep up the great work!
