Much needed break

Scott Bauhs | Profile
July 14, 2008

My longest break since the last USATF Championships (where I took a week of and a week really easy) was four days after the Chiba Ekiden. I also took three days off after USA Cross and two days off after Stanford and a few other random days off. I haven't run a step since I finished cooling down after the Trials.

Coming into the trials I still had high hopes though. I had strung together a few good workouts and was ready to have a decent race. I wasn't ready to have the race of my life however and if I had any chance of going to the Olympics I would have needed the race of my life. I held on for as long as I could, coming through the 5k in 13:57 but once I started dropping back everything started to unravel and I ran a minute slower in the second half.

Looking back it is obvious that I tried to do too much this season but it is impossible to say what I should have given up. The early races eventually took their toll as I tried to get ready for the trials but those early races were important to build my confidence for Stanford and Mt. SAC.

I am incredibly thankful for the season I had. I got to go to Japan and Scotland and I got big P.R.s in every distance. I learned a lot this year and I am excited for next year. Two weeks off is very important for my to recovery physically and mentally but I am ready to start running again. The days are seem so much longer when they aren't broken up by a run or two.

Another thing that I am thankful for are my fans. I heard people cheering for me from every part of the stands in Eugene and that was no small feat considering how loud it was up there. I've run some tough races this year and it is great to know how much support I have out there. I probably have more fans than I deserve (I'm really not that fast and have a long way to go with my running) but I'm not going to complain.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and cheering for me or for watching my races on TV and on Flotrack. Thanks for reading my Blogs and checking the results of my races. Thanks for talking about me on the messageboards and in your conversations with other runners. I'm hoping for a long career and I hope all of you stay with me through it.

I am returning to Chico.

The thought of making a living running is a dream of mine and to think that I could have the opportunity to do so right now is very attractive but after some thought and some investigation I came to the decision that I'm not quite ready.
Chico (the town), the team and most importantly my coach are the reasons that I am so fast and I'm not ready to leave. We will have a very solid cross-country team and while I should have several years as a professional runner, I will never have another year as a collegiate runner.
There are many ingredients to my recent successes but the most important aspect of my training is patience, and going pro early would be impatient. Being a professional runner is something that I think about a lot, probably too much... but at the end of the day, it is something that I need to let come to me and not something I need to be chasing.
I need to focus on my training and my racing, not on contracts and prize money. One more year won't be too long.

What a remarkable season! If you could go back a year and someone predicted you would race internationally representing your country (twice), win another national track championship, break four minutes in the mile , run an Olympic A standard time in the 10k and compete in the Olympic trials (where you would run a "slow" 28:54) we would have not believed it. Congratulations on a fantastic year. I was proud to sport a Chico State T-shirt at the trials and cheer you on in Eugene. I am already looking forward to Eugene2012.

After all that you have done this year, you have given me inspiration to work harder than before. I have some bad races and I realized after watching you that it takes hard work and patience to become a great runner. Good luck in the next few years and maybe one day i will give you some competion. Thanks

Hey Scott do you plan on returning to Chico St. to finish up your athletic eligibility or are you stepping up to the international level now. As a fellow DII athlete I would love to see you out there one more season to take down the Kenyan crew.

Also, I didn't want to get into it in this blog or write another blog but I posted a comment on my blog about John Chaplin. Its probably too late but soon everyone will forget about the trials and move on to new things and next year there will be yet another issue with people getting into the Champs.
