First Blog
November 1, 2007
It is a little weird to have your first blog be at the end of a season but it is what it is. 2007 was an amazing year for me that started with a 34 second PR in the 5k in February and is ending with my first Team USA team in November. When I went to college I had goals of breaking 29 and breaking 14 and being a professional/semiprofessional runner by the time I graduated. However, once I got here I improved at a rate far faster than I had anticipated and I’ve already reached my original goals 2 years early. Hopefully 2008 is as special as 2007 has been and I keep chipping away at my dreams.
For my first blog I figured I would explain a little about myself. I am a Social Science major at Chico State and I have no idea what I will do with my degree. I am very active and have been my whole life; I enjoy cycling, skateboarding, snowboarding, hiking/backpacking, rock-climbing, and anything else that takes place outside and doesn’t require too much burning of fossil fuels. I have two geckos (Nicodemus and Pocahontas) and a crazy girlfriend named Audrey to feed. My Mom (Teri) and Dad (Tom) are great people and they chase me all over the place to watch me run. I have a brother named Mark who plays Volleyball at the University of the Pacific in Stockton (CA).
I was born in Colorado and I still cheer for the Broncos. I lived in Bakersfield for 4 years when I was very young and I am glad my parents moved before I really knew what was going on. I went to San Ramon Valley High School in Danville CA and graduated in 2004. My Parents still live in Danville.
I started running in little age group road-races when I was in 3rd grade. I have a lot of medals from races where I was the only one in my age group. I joined club cross country when I was in 5th grade and quit playing soccer. I have always had an extremely competitive attitude and I realized that I could beat a lot of my peers at the mile in PE but I was mediocre at best at soccer. In seventh grade I joined track and field and quit baseball for the same reason. I started off slow, as a freshman in high school I had PRs of 5:01 and 11:00 but I was also like 90 pounds and 5 foot nothing. I grew a lot in high school and progressed to a 4:16 and 9:09 and a second place finish at the State meet 3200 in CA. I have continuously progressed ever since.
I consider myself a high mileage type of guy. Since I have been at Chico I have progressed to 100 mile weeks with consistent weeks between 85 and 100. My biggest running secret is consistency; I haven’t really missed any significant training in my 4 years here. Most of my weeks consist of two work-outs a long run and filled in with 8-12 mile aerobic runs, I will also add a few 4-6 mile runs (usually in the morning) to meet my mileage. Some the hardest work-outs I have ever done include a 12 mile tempo, 10x1000, 4xMile (all under 4:25) and some fast 400-800 work outs but for the most part my work-outs aren’t anything special and rarely above 80%. I really try to save my mind and my body for the long haul.
So far Gary Towne’s training has really exposed my gifts and hopefully I can continue to improve and run all over the world.
