Beijing 080808 Video Contest

The Beijing Games are the most anticipated Olympics in a generation. The once closed country of China has invested billions of dollars to throw the biggest and best coming out party the world has ever seen. TrackandFieldtours.com and Flotrack are teaming up to get you and a friend to the Olympics. TrackandFieldtours.com is the best way to catch all the track action in Beijing. It's so good that a lot of their clients are the athletes' family and friends. Track and Field Tours owners, Adam and Jessica Dailey were both Footlocker finalists and ran at the University of Arkansas who, like us at Flotrack, saw a need in our sport and decided to do something about it. The best uploaded video will win a track fans dream vacation, a trip for two to the 08 games with tickets to the track events. For more info about the wining prize and about the community's own Adam and Jessica Dailey click Track and Field Tours.

Win a trip to the 2008 Games in Beijing, China! Coast to Coast Relay 2004
In 2004, eighteen runners from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) ran from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Passing a gold-colored baton 24 hours a day, we ran down desert roads, mountain passes, and snowy highways; completing what is essentially a 1500 x 2 mile relay. Our goal was to better a time set 25 years earlier by another RIT team who first accomplished the feat. Debuting exclusively on Flotrack, this is a glimpse into our experiences along the 2,730- mile journey. We slept when we could, survived on energy bars, ran two miles when it was our turn and did something none of us will ever forget. Run Time: 27 minutes Featuring the music of Steppenwolf, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Motion City Soundtrack, John Butler Trio, Franz Ferdinand, Alain Giroux, The Strokes, R.L. Burnside, Don McLean, Los Umbrellos, Willie Nelson, and The Hives.

why where they carrying two batons
reply
Ryan Pancoast   February 6, 2008 at 2:17pm
Two reasons: 1) some people felt more balanced carrying two batons over the two mile distance and 2) We each had our own baton as a keepsake that could travel the entire distance with us. The golden baton however, was the one that was passed through the roster.

Just A Thought   February 6, 2008 at 9:24pm
The thing I do not get is that you were trying to beat a record established using 6 less participants, therefore allowing for less recovery/sleep time, and less miles per person over the period of time. Also why not run longer legs like 4-5 miles a piece to increase the amount of time between legs for sleep etc.

Let Me Know How That Goes   February 6, 2008 at 9:26pm
ill wait for your response in 12 days

Just Wondering   February 6, 2008 at 9:29pm
What time of year did you guys do this run
reply
Kevin Turko   February 6, 2008 at 10:02pm
The run was during one of our school breaks. In Mid-Late November(Right after XC Season).

During the 2004 run we had 18 runners and in 1979 they had 12 total. However, do to injuries and other problems we averaged 16 people on the roster during our trek.

The reason we did it with more people in 2004 is because our team was larger, and we had more expressed interest with the background of the 1979 relay run. (Also a large incoming freshman class that year)
reply
Re: Just A Thought   February 6, 2008 at 10:23pm
Lugie has it right. Greater anticipation of the 2004 run and a larger team led to a larger C2C roster. We viewed the time as a benchmark, but knew that the 1979 time was accomplished under much different circumstances and on a slightly different course. We would never consider our time a greater accomplishment; we simply wanted to run a faster time on paper. The beauty of a 2 mile segment is that you can run 2 miles under any conditions (sick, injured). There were times toward the end where I was limping, and glad I only had to run for 13 minutes.
reply
Bilo   February 6, 2008 at 11:29pm
Dear UofR,
in light of your comments, i will be waiting in much anticipation for your shorter, un-crappy version of your coast-to-coast run.
reply
UofR   February 6, 2008 at 11:42pm
Us at U of R don't need to run accross the country to try and prove our worth. We do that by kicking your ass every time we race you fags.

TNET   February 7, 2008 at 7:26am
Yeah, you sure did a real good job of that this past cross season...really whooped up on RIT at regionals, huh?

Maybe you should use some of your pent up frustrations on some extra miles.
reply
Woah   February 7, 2008 at 7:37am
It's alright TNET, the results speak for themselves. He's just trying to provoke a reaction.
reply
Danseuse.latine   February 7, 2008 at 8:55am
Take it OUTSIDE! I sense the rivalry between the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology which is a separate subject from this movie evaluation. U of R, please vent your school rivalry elsewhere... like on the track.
So, let's talk about the film. This was a pleasure to watch, is very well done and deserves accolades. GREAT FILM! Good luck in the contest! I vote 6!
reply
Blaine   February 7, 2008 at 9:54am
I remember getting along pretty well with UofR runners when I was at RIT - we used to party with one another quite a bit after local races. Maybe it was more competitive then - we weren't beating up on them too much.

The video is great. I still regret not quitting my job so that I could take part in the relay.
reply
U Of R Golf   February 7, 2008 at 10:38am
Agreed. time to show some Rochester pride, pool our votes and beat that 1546 video from Shippensburg, PA. Coast to Coast is such a better video.
reply
Its.funner.with.a.runner   February 7, 2008 at 10:52am
Agreed with danseuse. Your rivalry has nothing to do with this extremely well crafted video. It's awesome and these guys are awesome. Stop hating and support your runner community. These guys accomplished something really amazing and you didn't (and probably couldn't) do it! Whether you feel the need to prove it or not... go cool off and do a lap or two...

Back to the real topic... FANTASTIC job guys. Really. The run... the video... the music! I give it a 6!!!!! All the way to Beijing!
reply
Ryan Pancoast   February 7, 2008 at 12:23pm
I don't think we did anything a competent XC team couldn't have done. We simply had the right opportunity, the right organizers and a willing University. We feel lucky to have run it, and want to share some of the story. That's all.

...and I suppose this movie could have been longer had it included the run-ins with police, people flipping out (me) at other people (Leon), and lengthy quests for places to squat ... but luckily most of that wasn't filmed.
reply
Flipper   February 7, 2008 at 12:31pm
Yeah, I think it is better that we didn't file everything. Although a few quick cuts of Shiek ... chat with us may have been funny. Also, I was a tad disappointed we didn't see even a picture of Moose or Leon riding the Grasshopper oil rigs.
reply
Question   February 7, 2008 at 12:44pm
When you're actually voting, if you like the video the most, do you vote for 1 or 6? I'd imagine it's 1...?
reply
Ryan Pancoast   February 7, 2008 at 12:51pm
The high vote is 6. High score wins.
reply
RFer   February 7, 2008 at 12:56pm
Sorry it didn't make it in the video Flipper. Unfortunately, chronologically it fit in a really strange place in the story and would have thrown the flow off. Since you're the one that took those videos, you can definitely upload it yourself to this site, and it can be sort of an auxiliary video.

Yes, people love this video!; But also you obviously need access to many different computers - not merely different email or flotrack accounts; if ya know what I mean. :)

RFer   February 20, 2008 at 10:53am
Well, there were 22 people or so involved in the run itself, many of whom are actually in the video, so they're definitely voting. And we have a pretty devoted track team at RIT, who I assume are also voting. I'm voting everyday, and "curious" I hope you'll throw a few points our way when you vote too.

sorry curious.. but its just a good video.. no fowl play involved. If you'd like to find out how such things work, comment on 1546..

"upstateXC," let's not start that kind of thing on this comment board; it doesn't do anyone any good. "curious" I'm sure, wasn't trying to make any accusations. Let's just hope people continue to vote.

I am so NOT making accusations about vote fraud at all.
Thanks for explaining 3 comments ago that there are 22 people involved in the run itself, etc. etc. I do agree with what upstate XC is trying to say, that 15:46 and the falling hurdle girl video just aren't worthy! But they seem to have access to different computers and servers or they have everyone in their church voting for them without looking at the other videos. Too bad.

The winning video will be picked by the TRACK COMMUNITY based on the number of votes it receives.

As someone said on the crash video's comments page:
Well, it seems it doesn't matter how good the video is or isn't anyway, it's whoever can get the most FRIENDS and FAMILY to vote.

My Reply   February 25, 2008 at 7:42pm
I guess its just kind of disappointing to see a video doing so well only because someone knows how to utilize email and asking their friends and family, who probably wont even look at the other videos, to click the link and simply click on the 6. I feel that really takes away from this contest that other people put a lot of time and effort into.

So who should we vote for? The beer chuggers? Or one of the videos that have a lot of graphics or fancy music? Does that make a runner what they are. What the hell is wrong with you people. Is this about running and determination or making videos? Sheesh! I think its about determination. I think getting drunk and running is a waste of time. But people vote for that! Because a video is small doesnt take away from the fact she got up and continued regardless of her injuries. Look at these guys from RIT. They froze, stunk, lol, (ate Skittles)and did it all aCROSS COUNTRY. Is that a bad video? btw... the Guido part was hilarious. Go RIT!

Do you realize these runners gave up their end of the fall quarter school break and Thanksgiving with their families to run in this coast to coast relay? These are dedicated runners!
reply
Webster_x   February 27, 2008 at 10:01am
A couple of the alumni had to take unpaid time off from work in order to participate, along with the current students who ran.

RFer   February 27, 2008 at 3:55pm
We gave up a normal Thanksgiving with family, but it was a one Thanksgiving I'll never forget; sitting in a cramped RV on the side of the highway an hour before running through St. Louis in the dark. Then downing some White Castle sliders at 2am in Illinois.

The guy who submitted 1st place video is from Canada, and if he wins he's bringing a Kenyan to the Olympics with him. Let's give Coast to Coast Relay our votes so that U.S. citizens can win this USA contest.
Let's support R.I.T., Rochester, NY, USA!

I'm not voting for a video simply because it was put together by an American. I am voting for the video that I think is the best which is THE FUTURE CHAMP.

USA Contest?   June 22, 2008 at 12:43pm
This contest is not a USA contest, it is open to anyone. Also flotrack do cover great Canadians like kevin Sullivan and Reid Coolsaet and many international athletes as well. So it is not a US only site. Promoting running media around the world is the goal.

this doesn't have anything to do with your video, but The Future Champ is just perplexing. Good quality, good location - but horrible otherwise! Why is it winning? No one would watch that and know what is even going on, not even with the lengthy description the director offers...

There's nothing wrong with voting for a fellow NYer video - especially when the competition is so obvioulsy supported by a Columbian voting block. I'll be supporting the US team at Beijing too - not the Columbians, not Canada.
