Joe Franklin talks about the University of New Mexico and city of Albuquerque indoor track & field facility at the downtown convention center. UNM would like to start hosting more big meets there and bid for NCAAs and USA indoors. In terms of characteristics and features that venues need to host such events, UNM has it all. Could Albuquerque be one of the next track & field hubs in the United States?

You mean Fayetteville, Arkansas?

Tyson, Arkansas. Hands down the best indoor track and facility in the nation.

From first hand experience, the Texas A&M;athletic center has WALL to WALL mondo with hydraulic banks, and stands as a world class facility. This is no comparison as a glorified garage with incredibly low ceilings. NO WAY for NCAA's or World Indoor, this place is a dump! Go with A&M;or the Armory

they play music during races!
joe said it is to entertain the crowd, as if it is not entertaining enough..

If I remember correctly, the last time that NCAA's were held at altitude was 1989, at BYU, 4500 ft elevation. Outdoors at least. There were big concerns about the elevation then, but from all the people that I have talked to about it, it was said to have been an incredible meet. Granted, the distance times were a little slow, but its a championship, so they always are.

Goober 3 years ago

Why would it matter if times were slower for the distance events? NCAAs are about racing, not time trialing...

you all have to listen to whats he's saying. he's not saying their track is better but the overall venue and amenities are better. the track is in downtown albuquerque next to all the hotels and place to eat, so within walking distance of everything. not to mention the airport is only 10 minutes away so you can take a hotel shuttle (no rental cars). texas a&m;is beautiful but its in college station which is in the middle of no where. you have to drive at least an 1.5 hours to get their from either austin or houston.

as runners we dont think about this stuff, but for people deciding where meets will be held all these factors are huge. just some things to think about. if i could walk from my hotel to my meet how sweet would that be?? you wouldnt have to get their 5 hours early, thats for sure

"and a solo 8:10 3k by a D2 guy. Imagine a race with the country's best.".......................*SIGH* You do reallse who this "D2 guy" was? Aaron Braun is one of the best guys in the NCAA.. PERIOD!

Gdog 3 years ago

There is a world championship for indoors!! It's nothing to do with the weather in Northen America - open your eyes.

cdog 3 years ago

why are there indoor tracks in places like texas and arizona? I always thought indoors was just becuase it's too harsh outdoors.

Justin From Flotrack 3 years ago

Would it be a disadvantage to runners at sea-level colleges to run NCAA's there?

cherry & silver invite 3 years ago

Last weekend there was a solo 4:10 mile run and a solo 8:10 3k by a D2 guy. Imagine a race with the country's best. Its about 5k for altitude so not too crazy...fast times can still be seen

Questions 3 years ago

Are you allowed NCAA's at altitude? What about the new venue at Texas hosting NCAA's this year... I hear thats pretty good!?
I can't see the point if having super fast track at altitude, as your never going to be able to really utilize it? Of course I am forgetting this is only the case with distance events.
