With the California State Meet right around the corner, its hard to not think about Michael Granville. Granville is the guy who went out in the State Meet prelims back in 1996 and set the national high school record in the 800 meters which still stands today at 1:46. We met up with Granville to find out what he's up to now, but also to relive that moment with him and find out what happened afterwards.

I remember seeing Michael in High School when I was a freshman. I didn't really have any interactions with him, but he was our school's star. The times I would see him, he seemed very down to earth and never abusing his high school star status. I'd be around town and I'd see him and his father training at the local elementary school. He was a hard worker and I am sure his name is still mentioned at our High School some 13-14 years later... |

I ran with Granville at UCLA he was well on his way to a sub 45 season before he got hurt in the block instance he's refering to. I was 10 ft away from him when it happened, and had that not happened things would have been much different for Michael. I remember 1 month before he got hurt we did a ladder 600 - 400 - 300- 400 - 600. I still remeber Michaels times becasue it was the most amazing workout ive ever been part of. He was the only one who could finish it. 1:30 - 54 - 42 - 54 - 1:30. So Roll that up and smoke it if you a critic. Only an elite level athlete can get that workout done. |

all i know is michael granville still ran a 1:46 and even in high or in the pros a 1:46 can get you places, and you cant criticize because he's in history forever for his accomplishments and you can talk on him but in the end he's done more then the majority of runners do |

i agree with josh sucks. someone doesn't have to be consistent to be successful. they just have to be. . . well successful. An american record is definitely success. also alan webb is an olympian. more than 95 perent of the world can say for themselves. |

josh sucks

josh you are an absolute idiot. Michael said that he was a 3 time all american and won Pac-10's in the 4. How is that considered being a college failure?? And Alan webb has the american record in the mile, running 3:46 which is a mere 3 seconds off the world record. How is this even remotely considered a professional failure?? What a dumbass you are |

Did you seriously just compare an international record to an American high school record? I side with Josh. You're ed. |

An idiot I am. Seeing that Webb is never consistent, cracks in huge races, and owns a record that Hicham would laugh at, an idiot I am. Has Hasey ever loss? You incompetent impecile. You see, anyone can sling insults, but a true insult comes in the justification of claims. The justifying of someone's true idiocy. |

He was a three time all american. Alan Webb has the american record in the mile. . . he has also run the fastest 10k debut of any american. . . you are an idiot. |

Josh, Professional failure and college failure? Webb's career isn't over, he has lots of time to do amazing things, let's support him. And I can't say anything about Granville's college career but being a decent human being, as he sure seems to be, is far more important. May they both be blest! |

The high school he comes from is in a really rough area. Good to see such a great person can come from such humble roots. |

Alan Webb: professional failure. Granville: college failure. Hasey, oh you better believe she is going all the way. She can beat 98% of college girls now. Track hasn't seen the likes of Hasey. If I ever get her autograph I'm going to roll it up and smoke that ish. In honor of how she smokes every girl she races! |

This was a great interview. I'd could have listened for 20 minutes, it seemed like the 6+ mins flew by. Wonder what kind of mileage and workouts he did in high school. I'd get he was strength based with low mileage, but it would have been a great question to ask. Thanks for tracking him down. |

I can only imagine the pressure this guy had on him coming out of high school. Alan Webb and Jordan Hasay have similar pressure I would assume. I hope they can live in the now and relax like he said. |
