Just across the harbor from downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park is beautifully set on the shores of English Bay. In addition to the trails and landmarks within the park, an 8k loop around the perimeter offers great views throughout the route.

Agreed. Our Provincial and National XC Championships have been held in Stanley Park several times and the backdrop for the race is breathtaking. BC also boasts some incredible running trails within a short distance of Stanley Park, both for adventure racers and flat-trail runners. Don't feel like battling the city traffic? Try Grouse Mountain, Burnaby Lake or (further into the Fraser Valley) Mundy Park in Coquitlam to name but a few.

I Visited Vancouver in the summer of 2010. Decided to go for a long run at Stanley Park. Hands down one of the most breathtaking paved loops you'll ever see. Sea meets cliffs meet sky. I was so psyched to be running there, ended up going 1:18:00 for 13 miles...oops! Totally worth it though.

Awesome place!

Suggestions for future places: I agree with whoever below suggested Waterfall Glen and Swallow Cliff, both in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. I grew up on those trails and they are pretty nice places to run. But I think the best place to do that I haven't seen you guys cover yet would be the Chicago Lakefront Path. It's pretty awesome. I train on it everyday and there's plenty to cover on it; it goes for nearly 20 miles.

@brendan

Agreed. In general, the Cook County Forest Preserve District has some great running trails.

@mike higgins

Those two places are great, and another couple of places right around there include Swallow Cliff (8 mile crushed limestone trail through forest preserves, super awesome) and Waterfall Glenn (9.5 mile crushed limestone trail around Argonne Natl. Lab). Those are both better than the Prairie Path in my opinion even though the Prairie Path is longer for sure.

I ran there this summer...it was pretty great

You didn't even check out the miles of trails inside Stanley park that are full every Saturday with Vancouver's top distance runners doing repeats. Also the sea wall leaves Stanley park and goes for another 6 miles around false creek to Kits Beach (ranked top 10 beach in the world). From there it is a short run along the road till you reach Jericho Beach and the endless trails of UBC endowment lands, where every Sunday morning runners go for 9 to 20 mile runs on different trails.

Kevin you hardly gave justice to the best places to run in Vancouver.
You articulated my thoughts exactly Mr. Wells, nevertheless watching this got me longing to get home this summer and run in the greatest place on earth.

You want a good running spot in the midwest, where Verzbicas trains, and alot of really good athletes go check The Great Western Trail (St. Charles, Il.) and the Prairie Path.
