This is really a good kid. Modesty and honesty that is what Gaylen is all about. He has taken us along for a fantastic ride through his ups and downs with his enjoyable interviews. Always a class act. I wish him the very best.

When a quarterback wins the Heisman, nobody asks if he can catch, block, or kick. Its all about being the best at what you do.
I'm a Rupp fan, but I've become very interested in the multi events lately. Rupp won more titles, but I would argue winning one decathlon is equivalent to winning multiple events. Plus, though it was wind-aided, Eaton's in NCAA dec title this year he scored the most points in the running events in the dec ever.

Yea it's pretty much the MVP of the "league." Eaton wins the Dec and pent at nats, meanwhile Galen wins 3k, 5k, 5k, 10k, anchors winning DMR. Who's more valuable?

Justin From Flotrack 3 years ago

Yes. But can Galen throw a shot ;)

It's not fair to give Eaton the edge just because he is more versatile. He does the Dec because he wouldn't be nationally competitive at any one event. Galen on the other hand is dominant from the mile to 10k.

"His combination of speed, endurance, and strength is the definition of a versatile athlete"

ok...THIS season Galen broke the 4 minute mile indoors for the first time...then in 4 months following he ran 4 flat at the end of his 5k!
Strength, speed, and endurance are all there!

I like Galen Rupp and he's a great distance runner, but Ashton Eaton should win this because he can do everything. Think about it, while Galen might have tough distance workouts in practice, Eaton has tough workouts for 10 different events. His combination of speed, endurance, and strength is the definition of a versatile athlete

fernandez does not deserve this award, at least not yet in his career. no offense to eaton or fernandez, but if rupp doesn't win it will be a damn shame.

Victor LeMay 3 years ago

He should def win, but German is the fan favorite so who knows.

So does this award include cross country performance?
