Cross country is not supposed to be a factor at all. It is simply a Track and Field award. You may have years where no distance runners are included in the top-3. In fact, none of the women's finalists competed in XC last year. |

How can they give an award that is supposed to recognize the top athlete in NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country, before treack season begins? Is it for a calendar year instead of an academic year?It was for the 2008 XC season; the 2008-09 indoor season, and the 2009 outdoor season. |

While Barringer and Rupp are certainly deserving of this award, if they want this award to be taken seriously in the future, they'll need to award it to non-distance runners as well. |
