It is sad to see him in this condition. It is sad to hear that. But Haile still is my hero.

To one of the greatest runners ever to grace this planet, I thank you for the endless excitement you have given me with your gutsy races, from championships to the marathon. Thank you Haile, and good luck to you and your family.

he should get into pro cycling

End of an era! With out a doubt, I'm sure Haile has his reasons for everything. The man got himself to 2:03:59 so i'm sure he knows what he's doing.

BUT! if he hangs out for a few years, he could be a monster on the Masters scene haha

Pretty surprising that he retired after the race, obviously hes getting old but he was still a beast. You can tell he was pretty sad about it, he held in the tears

i don't think the word embarrassing was meant to slander Haile. For Haile it is disappointing and he probably feels at least a little embarrassed not to live up to the expectations people had for his race. When you are the world record holder it always hurts to dnf. It was evident in this interview that Haile felt that he let people down, something that he definitely did not do. He is a class act and he deserves a lot of respect no matter what his final decision is.

What's embarrassing is your ass when you cross the finish line at 2:40. ( At best) Then you think you are accomplished enough to post about the elite of the elite. Funny!

As an admirer of distance runners and a recreational runner myself, I have to say Haile represented the sport at a level that everyone could notice. I hope Haile lives his life thinking of his impact on such a diverse sport fans who happen to love this spirit of accomplishment.

Anyone here think it's possible that his injury is one that ends careers. Sure people have had knee surgery, but few come back, and the ones that do didn't have it at age 35. The man is always going to run, but to compete at the level he wanted to be, will ultimately destroy his body, and require surgery. He is the greatest we have ever knew, of course with bekele a close second : ) , but he has a lot of other life outside of running, and I think he will devote his time to those things, and run recreationaly for the rest of his days.

What an emotional interview. For all his accomplishments and world records. I believe the injury is overwhelming to him after a lifetime of being injury free. Injuries are not in his control. I hope he takes the time to heal and reconsider. I really want to see him healthy and take his chance at gold in 2012.

Haile is no doubt one of the best runners ever. It is sad to see him leave the sport under such a bitter last race. It would have been nice to see a victorious Haile reaching the line in maybe another record of some sort. I hope that Haile knows that he will not be remembered for the low points in his career such as yesterdays marathon but will be remembered for his records and beutiful races he ran.

What an incredibly emotional interview. I have no idea what the Dr. told him or what his MRI results were, but can't help but feel his decision might be because he feels like he disappointed his fans. What happened does not erase all that he has done or what he could do in the future on and off the streets. He's simply an amazing man.

"No Complain... it's better not to complain anymore."
I can't help but feel ashamed of myself: i figured that there was a distinct possibililty that Haile wouldn't finish the race today. I was hoping for Geb's victory with all my heart, but i was, in truth, a little bit fatalistic about an outcome that eventually came to pass. I don't believe Geb has ever won a marathon that wasn't a time trial or where his opponent's weren't hopelessly out of his league. This doesn't matter, because we as followers and fans of the Emperor have come to expect superhuman feats and we throw up our hands when our hero shows the slightest chink in his armour. We don't want him to be human because as a runner and as a person he is simply one of the greatest ever. I have never cried over the retirement of a sportman before today. I still want to meet this man, shake his hand and tell him how much he's inspired me and how much i love him.

this is not the way a legend like Geb should go out, i respect his decision and the running world will miss him

padillarun 3 years ago

it is sad to hear that. i think he has the potential to be in london 2012.
but Haile still is my hero.

Chris Kurth 3 years ago

Wow, I didn't think his retirement would hit him THAT hard when watching the video. Too bad he could not win his last Marathon. Would have been a legendary and fitting ending to a stellar career.
Let's see him continue to do some good in his country... I am excited to learn about what other projects he is going to take on.

Christopher Kelsall 3 years ago

It is sort of an unwritten rule or rather advice to not make a retirement decision right after losing or in this case DNFing. His feelings may change. But either way, to better what he has accomplished in the past is nearly impossible.

haile is wonderful and has helped many of the other athletes I know in many different ways such as encouragement and financially. Ithink he's a great person and don't want to see him retire from running. being older than haile, I have found a new and fun and great career as a masters runner and hope he will decide to keep competing or come back to competing as a masters because it sure is a lot of fun. sometimes we go through really hard times as competitors but find that we really can't stop and come back. for me, I am running faster at 41 than I did from 33-40 and that's why I hope he will return to competition because sometimes you just don't know what good you will do.

to watch a man usually so happy cry saddened me. :'(
I hope that this is just temporary and he is coming back.
I idolize this man and to see him stop running brings tears to my eyes. He seemed so sad like he had no choice but end it there. It didnt seem like he was satisfied with what he had done.

He probably just feels like retiring because he is dealing with an injury.

This guy has been amazing throughout his career. What a great person he is and I can't believe how the press treated his announcement. Instead of accepting his statement, they continued to badger him for answers. They should have all given him a standing ovation and perpetually thanked him for allowing us to witness and share in his great career. Instead, we allowed the greatest distance runner of all time to exit the stage in shame. Shame on us because we missed an opportunity to glorify this humble yet courageous man and send him off the right way...with great admiration...!
