Flotrack's Best of 2011 - Performance of the Year!
Jenny Simpson becomes the first American women to win the 1500m gold medal since Mary Decker-Slaney in 1983. Simpson was not the favorite on paper at the 2011 Track & Field World Championships, but ran comfortable through the rounds and put herself in position over the final 300 meters of the race. This is Simpson's first international medal and now looks to be one of the favorites for gold as we head into the 2012 Olympic Games!

Sept. 1, 2011: After teammate Morgan Uceny is taken out in a fall, American Jenny Simpson wins a stunning gold medal in the women's 1500m. From Universal Sports

It doesn't matter that the race was "slow". No one brings it like Jenny Barringer Simpson when it counts. No one. Yeah she is a bit y and annoying but she is a competitive beast. I hope she wins olympic gold. Uceny doesn't have a prayer against this girl.

I'm hoping the performance of 2012 will be.
Uceny - Simpson - Rowbury - Wurth Thomas
1,2,3,4 sweep at the olympic games!!!!

Was it really necessary to tweet this to Mammoth Track Club? Rubbing salt in the wound anyone?

objection 5 months ago

Great to get a gold and all but heres my objection to this being chosen as 'Perforjmance of the Year':
1. It was SLOW. In fact it was the slowest winng time for a 1500m gold medallist of all time.
2. Another American athlete and race favorite was tripped. Did that form part of your decision to make this your 'Performance of the Year'?
3. The womens 1500m as a whole was ridiculously weak in 2011 - at no point did it make for exciting or competitive races
4. The most important point- there were FOUR other US female gold medallists. Three of which won in world leading times! Lashinda Demus won the the USA's first gold medal in the 400m Hurdles for the first time since 1995 and she did it in a world lead and new American record.

And if you ignore wc medals(even though you obviously don't) I can think of at least half a dozen others more worthy of 'Performance of the Year'- Hall, Rupp, Uceny, Jeter, Williams, Hardee, etc

If you look near the end of the video, you'll see Jamal walking to the finish line. She's the real anonymous coward here.

"I can't remember the last time a woman won the world championships. Especially from the United States." What is that supposed to mean???

I think of others 5 months ago

Performance of The Year- Uceny being intentionally taken out. Thats all I get from this race.

lol 5 months ago

lets see she won the GOLD at the WORLD championships, in a distance event.... It's not like they had a lot of American's to pick from... clearly the performance of the year!

Surprise Surprise 5 months ago

I was wondering where Flotrack would put in their golden girl. You guys really have the most awful bias when it comes to certain athletes

The start went quick and all of a sudden the leaders slowed down and went tactical. This was like one of those rear end pileups on the Dan Diego Freeway. Morgan got tangled up in it. Jen was racy though. Got away from all of that, wide around the pack, bursts of speed whenever she wanted to, I got the feeling by mid-race she was all loaded up for a bolt to the finish. Every one's been running multiple heats, some in more than one event. Morgan and Jen both were ready to play this game over the last 200 meters. This has been Morgan's best year ever. She'll be in London next August!

Jenny earned it. Couldn't help remember seeing both Uceny and Anna Pierce taken out of an international race when both were in sub-2:00 800 condition, and either one could have been called the favorite in a German (?? race in 2009. In both cases it was a minor African runner who 'sacrificed' herself. For the African runners these races are feeding families and, in some cases, villages. They work together, just like professional cyclists, except that the cyclists know, and are hired as domestiques, or winners. Uceny was the favorite, and may well have been taken out. The world championship could mean a quarter million dollars in endorsements, racing fees, public appearances. Our runners need to plan and work as a team. The African runners mostly run for the same national coach, and are clearly organized.

Watch Ejigu (with an amazingly relaxed expression almost throughout her race, and beautiful smile as Defar won) run on Meseret Defar's shoulder, preventing anyone from running right behind Defar, to step on her heels, or from using elbows from the side, in the Qatar indoor championship.in 2010. Ejigu was Defar's bodyguard. More power to them. They are amazing runners, and are doing what they must to make their livings. If American runners, who certainly must know what is going on, but will never say it openly, don't run as a team their chances at winner's bonuses are diminished. Very few runners are making enough money to warrant the enourmous daily, yearly effort, family hardship, and pain it takes to compete.
Merga has been a dervish in so many races, having taken out Americans and Kenyans and American former Kenyans, that he is being noticed by the politically correct officials and some fans. Had he taken out Lagat completely, Ethopians would have been silver and bronze. I'm glad that Jenny won, But, like everyone else, I saw how strong Uceny has become, and think we could have been one-two if they hadn't taken her out. Uceny, like most all the runners, is an example of talent, discipline and courage. I also think she would have won without interference. I hope our runners, even when their major competition is other Americans, will begin race as a team.
Merga forced himself into Lagat's lane, and was not sanctioned for that. Uceny had someone step on her from behind. There should tighter scrutiny, but there won't be until the runners need to resort to karate chops and weapons! Solinski is big, but that couldn't prevent his being shoved into the infield earlier in the year. Perhaps we can turn the 400 meter oval into and octagon with a fence and allow kicks and blows? Time to clean it up. The traveling video cameras could be used to police and enforce 'interference' violations. Middle distance racing shouldn't be a contact sport.

Jenny had complete opposite race luck as Nick Simmons. Simmons door closed at same point Jennnys opened. Great job though!
I saw her come onto the running scene as a Junior in florida high school cross country. I then said, wow this what its like to see real world class talent. I also said the same thing watching Sanya Richards run in high school. Glad to see Florida representing!
