I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe for everyone that this guy triples and runs insanely high mileage? If anybody, college athletes should know that we tend to have an obsession with sport, and for some people that means less Flotrack and more mileage or cross training. It's not crazy, it's commitment.

I agree

"Jim Ryun admitted at the end of his career that he lied about his mileage try and keep competition from reaching his level."

Bull . Jim Ryun never lied about anything. He is probably the most profiled US track athlete in history. I just read an old sports illustrated article today that talked of him doing over 100 miles per week in HIGH SCHOOL. This is consistent with his training logs, and also consistent with what athletes have said who trained with him and were also coached by Bob Timmons. Don't make up.

c'mon guys
this is NOT unheard of

first of all, lawi lalang does NOT run 50mpw. that is a myth, james li's athletes do not count milage that is slower than a certain pace, probably 6:30 or 6:00 for lalang.
second of all, people in the past have run way more than 160mpw. what do you think you need to do to be good? speed workouts and drills? give me a break.
gerry lindgren ran far more than that in HIGH SCHOOL. and arthur lydiards athletes, and other new zealanders at the time ran upwards of 300mpw.
if his body can handle it, there is no reason not to do it, look at where it got him. i know everyone wants to believe that lawi's 50mpw can get you anywhere you want to get competitively. but the truth is, for 99% of us milage under 70mpw isn't gonna get us what we want out of our running careers

I love the slight hint at his rivalry with 'Miles' Batty and how he is now beyond his shadow with his XC and now 3k victory over him. Very clever...

wow hes a beast!

definately high limeage....i went from a 32 in the 8k to a 27 in 1 season of of only 60 miles a week constatntly

Anonymous Coward 4 months ago

high mileage high mileage. who cares. it works for some, it doesn't for others. lagat takes sunday off, farah runs 20+ blah blah blah. let's talk about it some more because that's productive. if levins has a bad race will you then start saying that maybe too much mileage is bad and he should ease back? runners talk too much, except the ones that are actually successful

flotrack. you guys have access to great collegiate and professional runners. please be professional and ask intelligent questions

im pretty sure that someone who just ran a 13:51 and a 7:48 in the same day is not counting a 3 mile run as 7 miles and isnt counting frisbee as running, hes one of the best college distance runners in the country.

The real deal 4 months ago

Just because YOU can't comprehend doing 160 miles doesn't mean that he can't; like he said, it was a slow upward progression. This guy is the real deal, folks. His races obviously prove it.

If you actually believe Lawi only runs as much as he says you're a fool, Jim Ryun admitted at the end of his career that he lied about his mileage try and keep competition from reaching his level. Lawi doesn't run no 50 miles a week. 90-100 at least.

Okay okay 4 months ago

You guys are actin ed Ryan hall does 140 and Chinese marathoners do 200. People run two times a day all the time so is it really that hard to believe that someone took it a step further and runs 3X? The week I ran 94 miles I ran three times a couple days that week, 20 minute shake out, 10 mile run, then an easy 3 in the PM. I guarantee Cam actually runs this much. When I moved from 60 to 85 I PR'd in the 10k from 34:30 to 32:38 in one season. High mileage makes you so much stronger. Even nick symmonds runs 70 miles a week and he just does the 800, a two lap race. I plan on hitting 90 this track season, and then 100 this summer for Cross country. And I'm a miler

Anonymous Coward 4 months ago

He probaly does what a lot of people do, as for what they consider "miles" to be. I know kids who will do a 3 mile tempo and call it "7 miles" because of percieved effort. They will also consider stuff like playing frisbee for being a "6 mile run".

step it up 4 months ago

the questions asked were really poor. instead of obsessing over how many miles he is doing, you shouldve asked about the correlation between his performances and his mileage, tapering his mileage for races and workouts. Goals post collegiate wise. I hate the fanboy style in most flotrack interviews.

beast

SURE!!! 4 months ago

I highly doubt he runs 3x a day. Who else in NCAA runs 3x a day? Definitely not anyone!! And 160 miles? thats 4x the amount of Lawi Lalang during the xc season.

maybe? 4 months ago

this would be so sick if you took footage from his double and used it as B-roll

Anonymous Coward 4 months ago

How in the world can he handle 160 miles? And is it really necessary?
