Galen Rupp runs 3:50.92 in the mile at the 2013 BU Terrier Invitational in an American Record attempt at the distance. The time was the second fastest all-time by an American and the fifth fastest all-time in the world. Bernard Lagat still owns the American record with his 3:49.89.

he can more than just compete in the the olympic 10k and 5k and run this by himself. man, talk about range.... if the olympics/world champs were abit more spread out he could sweep a serious number medals for the USA |

I was there live and I have to say the announcers did a fantastic job capturing the epicness of the race. The whole place literally erupted with 400 to go and the commentator's enthusiasm was spot on with the emotion in the building. Great job. Also, Ross did a perfect job. He lead them through the 8 at 1:54 point...EXACTLY what they were planning on hitting. Even if the first 200 was a little slow, he did a great job immediately putting them back on pace. Ulrey looked SMOOTH...he probably could have run low 3:50's himself. Thanks for putting this up Flotrack. |

ross did good give em a break. if you have ulrey breathing down your kneck on the outside, stepping off the track on the inside was the smart thing to do |

Making some quality sub-4:00 athletes look like novices, very impressive! Enthusiastic commentary will only help grow the sport, which I assume is everyone's goal here. |

And by '"EPO" Possibly. We all hope not." What I mean (to spell it out) is I think not. It's not a surpise he is this fast. And also, we probably have seen many with this range. We just didn't develop it. As soon as we showed promise in HS 5k XC, we use to relegate those runners as "slower." And then the milers would also go 800, and stay on the track. 5k guys only dabbled with speed for decades, they were 2 milers in HS track. Bob Kennedy, started to show us you could be both. And he was the first to seriously compete with the Rift Valley. We just needed someone to figure out that last 600. Rupp is what that looks like. Let's go America. Next gen, it's your move. Stay clean and study the past, then go fast! |

"EPO" Possibly. We all hope not. But if Rupp can run 52 seconds after nearly 6 miles of mind-numbing world-class clip. This is within his grasp. I never heard anyone question Lagat, when he could switch from 5000 to 1500 with ease. We just haven't seen an American-born runner with range like this since times of say Bob Schul. The rest of the world-class running world knows that 5 and 10k guys need to be blistering fast, period. |
